Alfa Romeo Fuel Drain

ABOUT

Filling Diesel in a Petrol Alfa Romeo is a very common error. And exactly what you should do about it depends on a few factors. Assuming you want to know what to do to fix it then stay with me.
Listed below are the main variables to be aware of whenever deciding on whether or not to have a fuel drain:

  1. How much Diesel have you put in to the Alfa Romeo, bearing in mind that the fuel tank capacity of the Alfa Romeo 164 is usually about 70 litres?
    1. A small amount of Diesel, something like 3.5 litres of Diesel in a Petrol 164 will typically not really be a big problem. Experience has shown us that anything less than 3.5 litres (5% of the overall fuel tank capacity) is quite often capable of being sufficiently diluted by means of thoroughly filling up the tank with the right fuel.
It's rather uncommon to find a motor vehicle having problems with lower than 5% wrong fuel contamination. Keep in mind that it is uncommon - certainly not impossible to encounter. You can get a few vehicles that don't stand any level of contamination whatsoever.
    2. Somewhere between 3.5 and 7 litres of Diesel in the Alfa Romeo (5 to 10%) is a 50/50 situation. Our practical experience demonstrates that as many people get away with it as those people who don't. When deciding on whether or not to chance it and just fill it up bear in mind that it is the same as betting it all on black - you have a 50/50 chance of it working.
    3. Anything in excess of 7 litres of Diesel in your Petrol 164 ought to straight away be removed seeing as your likelihood of driving with this amount of contamination is probably less than one in 50 - extremely huge odds.
  2. Put Diesel in a Petrol Alfa Romeo and drove it: Have you noted any performance issues ever since putting the incorrect fuel in your 164? In that case, get it drained no matter the quantity of Diesel or the contamination percentage. Proceeding to run running a vehicle that is already beginning to suffer from the effect of fuel contamination can typically result in even more damage being caused to your fuel system.
  3. Are you looking for reassurance?
Then get it emptied. Regardless of the contamination ratio, there is inevitably a certain level of threat resulting from operating a Petrol motor on Petrol contaminated with Diesel. Possible consequences of driving a vehicle on the wrong fuel include things like the engine refusing to start, running lumpy, reduced power, degradation of the high-pressure pump, damaged or bunged injectors, and the like. These are some of the most common Diesel in Petrol symptoms, and in the event that you detect any of them then stop driving and have it removed asap.

No! The EU Block Exemption Regulations clearly state that "the work can be carried out by as long as that garage uses manufacturer approved parts and correctly follows the manufacturer's service schedule."

Can I top it up with Petrol and add some 2-stroke oil?

Answer

This might work on some vehicles in some cases, but in the majority on instances it won't and you risk damaging the Lambda sensors as well as fuel pump and injectors, just as a regular misfuel.
