BMW Fuel Drain

ABOUT

Filling up with Diesel in a Petrol BMW is a regular mistake to make. And what you need to do about it depends upon a few factors. Assuming you would like to find out what it is best to do about it then read on.
Here are the main factors to keep in mind when deciding on whether or not to get your car drained:

  1. Exactly how much Diesel did you put in to the BMW, taking into consideration that the fuel tank capacity of the BMW M3 is in most cases approximately 65 litres?
    1. A small amount of Diesel, less than 3.25 litres of Diesel in a Petrol M3 will normally not be a significant problem. Experience has shown us that anything under 3.25 litres (roughly 5% of the overall fuel tank) is sometimes capable of being adequately diluted by means of thoroughly filling the tank with Petrol.
It is pretty rare to come across a car or truck experiencing issues with lower than 5% incorrect fuel contamination. Please remember it is very rare - certainly not impossible to find. There are certain motor vehicles that won't endure any degree of contamination in the slightest.
    2. Between 3.25 and 6.5 litres of Diesel in the BMW (5 to 10%) is really a 50/50 condition. Our working experience has confirmed that as many motorists get away with this as those who don't. When deciding whether to risk it and just simply fill it up consider that it is the same thing as gambling all of it on black - you have a 50/50 chance of it working out.
    3. Anything more than 6.5 litres of Diesel in a Petrol M3 must as soon as possible be drained seeing as your likelihood of succeeding with this level of contamination is very likely less than one in 50 - seriously long odds.
  2. Put some Diesel in a Petrol BMW and drove it: Have you detected any kind of performance concerns as a result of putting the incorrect fuel in the M3? If that's the case, have it removed regardless of the volume of Diesel or the contamination ratio. Continually driving a car that is now starting to suffer from the consequences of fuel contamination can only lead to even more harm being caused to the fuel system components.
  3. Are you looking for reassurance?
You should get it drained. Whatever the contamination ratio, there is invariably some extent of risk linked with operating a Petrol engine on fuel contaminated with the incorrect fuel. Likely results of driving a vehicle on the incorrect fuel include things like the motor not starting, running unevenly, losing power, wearing of the high-pressure pump, damaged or clogged injectors, etc. These are several of the most typical Diesel in Petrol signs or symptoms, and should you observe any of them then stop and have it removed asap.

Do not simply get any jack-of-all-trades to try to repair your vehicle. We are BMW specialists and hold the skills and working experience required to make certain that you get back on the road with minimum hassle or trouble.

Diesel in Petrol Questions

When someone has put Diesel in a Petrol car they have a few very common questions. So we have compiled a list of the most Frequently Asked Questions for you

I put Diesel in a Petrol car and drove it. What do I do?

Answer

Turn off the car as soon as possible and call us. Continuing to run a vehicle on the wrong fuel can potentially damage it. We will be able to give you advice and assistance based on your circumstances

Will driving a Petrol car on Diesel cause damage to it?

Answer

It can. However, if the problem is caught and remedied quickly the risks will be minimal. Of the 1,500 vehicles we attend every month, less than 0.5% have suffered and substantial damage requiring parts replacement.

How much Diesel can I get away with in a Petrol car?

Answer

The safe answer is none. However you might be able to get away with a very low contamination ratio. That being said, we always highly recommend draining anything over a 5% contamination ratio asap.

I know about petrol in diesel, but what about Super Unleaded?

Answer

Putting Super Unleaded, or Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate Unleaded, etc, will have the exact same effect as putting regular unleaded petrol in your diesel car and will need to be drained out and flushed.

Will getting you to do a fuel drain void my warranty?

Answer

No! The EU Block Exemption Regulations clearly state that "the work can be carried out by as long as that garage uses manufacturer approved parts and correctly follows the manufacturer's service schedule."

Can I top it up with Petrol and add some 2-stroke oil?

Answer

This might work on some vehicles in some cases, but in the majority on instances it won't and you risk damaging the Lambda sensors as well as fuel pump and injectors, just as a regular misfuel.
