Smart Fuel Drain

Putting Diesel in a Petrol Smart is a usual mistake. And its solution is dependent upon a few things. In case you want to find out what you must do to sort it out then keep reading.
Here are the main variables to keep in mind when deciding whether or not to get it drained:

  1. Exactly how much Diesel have you put in the Smart, considering that the fuel capacity of your Smart crossblade is usually about 33 litres?
    1. A small quantity of Diesel, as little as 1.65 litres of Diesel in a Petrol crossblade will generally not necessarily be a major problem. Experience has shown us that an amount less than 1.65 litres (about 5% of the overall fuel tank volume) is in many instances able to be completely diluted by means of thoroughly topping up the tank with the correct fuel.
It's quite rare to come across an automobile going through issues because of less than 5% wrong fuel contamination. Bear in mind that it is very infrequent - not impossible to encounter. You can get a number of motor vehicles that don't stand any quantity of fuel contamination whatsoever.
    2. Between 1.65 and 3.3 litres of Diesel in the Smart (from 5 to 10%) is a 50/50 condition. Our practical experience has confirmed that as many people get away with it as those people who break down. Any time you're trying to decide whether to chance it and just top it up recognise that it is exactly like gambling your car on black - you will have a 50/50 possibility of it working.
    3. Anything above 3.3 litres of Diesel in your Petrol crossblade must right away be drained out as your probability of driving with this level of contamination is in all likelihood less than one in fifty - really huge odds.
  2. Put some Diesel in a Petrol Smart and drove it: Have you observed any kind of performance difficulties as a result of putting the wrong fuel in your crossblade? If you have, have it drained irrespective of the amount of Diesel or even the contamination percentage. Proceeding to run driving a motor vehicle that is already starting to suffer the effect of fuel contamination will typically result in more and more harm being caused to your fuel system parts.
  3. Are you interested in reassurance?
In that case get it emptied. Regardless of contamination ratio, there is always some degree of risk caused by driving a Petrol motor on fuel contaminated with the incorrect fuel. Probable consequences of driving a car on the incorrect fuel include things like the motor refusing to start, running unevenly, lack of power, wearing of the high-pressure pump, damaged or clogged injectors, and so forth. These are a few of the commonest Diesel in Petrol warning signs, and if you detect any of them then stop and have it drained asap.

Turn off the car as soon as possible and call us. Continuing to run a vehicle on the wrong fuel can potentially damage it. We will be able to give you advice and assistance based on your circumstances

Will driving a Petrol car on Diesel cause damage to it?

It can. However, if the problem is caught and remedied quickly the risks will be minimal. Of the 1,500 vehicles we attend every month, less than 0.5% have suffered and substantial damage requiring parts replacement.

How much Diesel can I get away with in a Petrol car?

The safe answer is none. However you might be able to get away with a very low contamination ratio. That being said, we always highly recommend draining anything over a 5% contamination ratio asap.

I know about petrol in diesel, but what about Super Unleaded?

Putting Super Unleaded, or Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate Unleaded, etc, will have the exact same effect as putting regular unleaded petrol in your diesel car and will need to be drained out and flushed.

Will getting you to do a fuel drain void my warranty?

No! The EU Block Exemption Regulations clearly state that "the work can be carried out by as long as that garage uses manufacturer approved parts and correctly follows the manufacturer's service schedule."

Can I top it up with Petrol and add some 2-stroke oil?

This might work on some vehicles in some cases, but in the majority on instances it won't and you risk damaging the Lambda sensors as well as fuel pump and injectors, just as a regular misfuel.
