Volvo Fuel Drain

Filling Diesel in a Petrol Volvo is a common error. And its remedy depends upon a variety of things. If perhaps you want to know what it is advisable to do about it then stay with me.
Let us discuss the main variables to consider when deciding whether or not to have a fuel drain:

  1. How much Diesel have you put in to the Volvo, taking into account that the fuel capacity of your Volvo V50 is usually around 62 litres?
    1. Hardly any Diesel, less than 3.1 litres of Diesel in a Petrol V50 will usually not necessarily be a big problem. Experience has taught us that anything less than 3.1 litres (which is almost 5% of the entire fuel tank) is very often able to be completely diluted by means of thoroughly filling up the rest of the tank with Petrol.
It is extremely rare to come across a car or truck suffering from issues due to under 5% wrong fuel contamination. Bear in mind that it is very infrequent - certainly not impossible to find. There are a few motor vehicles that won't stand any degree of fuel contamination in the slightest.
    2. Somewhere between 3.1 and 6.2 litres of Diesel in the Volvo (5 to 10%) is more of a 50/50 scenario. Our experience demonstrates that as many motorists get away with it as those who break down. Whenever figuring out whether to chance it and just fill it up bear in mind that it is the same thing as betting everything on black - you've got a 50/50 chance of it being ok.
    3. Anything above 6.2 litres of Diesel in a Petrol V50 must as soon as possible be drained out because your likelihood of driving with this level of contamination is undoubtedly lower than one in 50 - extremely big odds.
  2. Put Diesel in a Petrol Volvo and drove it: Have you observed any kind of performance issues since putting the incorrect fuel in your V50? If that's the case, have it emptied regardless of the quantity of Diesel or the contamination percentage. Still driving a car that is now beginning to suffer the consequences of fuel contamination will probably only result in more and more harm affecting the fuel system parts.
  3. Are you looking for security?
You should get it removed. No matter the contamination ratio, there is inevitably some amount of threat associated with operating a Petrol motor on fuel contaminated with Diesel. Possible implications of driving on the wrong fuel include things like the engine refusing to start, running lumpy, loss in power, degradation of the high-pressure pump, worn out or clogged injectors, and the like. These are some of the most typical Diesel in Petrol warning signs, and should you observe any of them cease driving and get it drained as soon as possible.

Steer clear of getting any jack-of-all-trades to try to fix your car. We are Volvo experts and possess the qualifications and experience needed to make certain you get back on the road with no hassle or trouble.

Diesel in Petrol FAQs

When someone has put Diesel in a Petrol car they have a few very common questions. So we have compiled a list of the most Frequently Asked Questions for you

I put Diesel in a Petrol car and drove it. What do I do?

Turn off the car as soon as possible and call us. Continuing to run a vehicle on the wrong fuel can potentially damage it. We will be able to give you advice and assistance based on your circumstances

Will driving a Petrol car on Diesel cause damage to it?

It can. However, if the problem is caught and remedied quickly the risks will be minimal. Of the 1,500 vehicles we attend every month, less than 0.5% have suffered and substantial damage requiring parts replacement.

How much Diesel can I get away with in a Petrol car?

The safe answer is none. However you might be able to get away with a very low contamination ratio. That being said, we always highly recommend draining anything over a 5% contamination ratio asap.

I know about petrol in diesel, but what about Super Unleaded?

Putting Super Unleaded, or Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate Unleaded, etc, will have the exact same effect as putting regular unleaded petrol in your diesel car and will need to be drained out and flushed.

Will getting you to do a fuel drain void my warranty?

No! The EU Block Exemption Regulations clearly state that "the work can be carried out by as long as that garage uses manufacturer approved parts and correctly follows the manufacturer's service schedule."

Can I top it up with Petrol and add some 2-stroke oil?

This might work on some vehicles in some cases, but in the majority on instances it won't and you risk damaging the Lambda sensors as well as fuel pump and injectors, just as a regular misfuel.
