BMW Fuel Drain

ABOUT

Filling up with Petrol in a Diesel BMW is a regularly occurring error. And its remedy depends upon a number of factors. If perhaps you would like to find out what you should do about it then read on.
Here are the most crucial variables to take into account whenever deciding whether or not to have your car drained:

  1. How much Petrol did you put into the BMW, keeping in mind that the fuel tank capacity of the BMW 535d is normally approximately 70 litres?
    1. A tiny amount of Petrol, something like 3.5 litres of Petrol in a Diesel 535d will quite often not really be a massive problem. Experience has proven to us that an amount under 3.5 litres (almost 5% of the fuel tank capacity) is oftentimes capable of being sufficiently diluted through thoroughly topping up the tank with Diesel.
It is very uncommon to come across a vehicle experiencing problems because of below 5% incorrect fuel contamination. Please remember it is infrequent - in no way impossible to find. You can get some vehicles that will not endure any level of contamination in the slightest.
    2. Somewhere between 3.5 and 7 litres of Petrol in the BMW (from 5 to 10%) is really a 50/50 scenario. Our practical experience has shown us that as many drivers get away with this as those who break down. When trying to decide whether or not to chance it and simply fill it up bear in mind that it is very much like wagering it all on black - you have a 50/50 chance of it working.
    3. Anything in excess of 7 litres of Petrol in your Diesel 535d really should immediately be drained out as your probability of getting away with that level of contamination is very likely below one in fifty - seriously huge odds.
  2. Put some Petrol in a Diesel BMW and drove it: Have you noted any performance problems since putting the bad fuel in the 535d? In that case, get it emptied regardless of the quantity of Petrol or even the contamination percentage. Proceeding to run running a vehicle that is now starting to suffer from the effect of fuel contamination will probably just lead to more harm being done to your fuel system components.
  3. Do you want peace of mind?
You should get it removed. Regardless of contamination percentage, there is invariably a certain level of threat associated with operating a Diesel engine on Diesel contaminated with Petrol. Probable implications of driving a vehicle on the incorrect fuel include things like the motor refusing to start, running lumpy, reduced power, degradation of the high-pressure pump, damaged or clogged injectors, and so forth. These are some of the most frequently seen Petrol in Diesel symptoms, and should you notice any of them then stop and get it removed right away.

Avoid having any unqualified so-and-so to attend your vehicle. We are BMW specialists and have the skills and experience required to ensure that you are back on the road with little hassle or trouble.

I put Petrol in a Diesel car and drove it. What do I do?

Answer

Turn off the car as soon as possible and call us. Continuing to run a vehicle on the wrong fuel can potentially damage it. We will be able to give you advice and assistance based on your circumstances

Will driving a Diesel car on Petrol cause damage to it?

Answer

It can. However, if the problem is caught and remedied quickly the risks will be minimal. Of the 1,500 vehicles we attend every month, less than 0.5% have suffered and substantial damage requiring parts replacement.

How much Petrol can I get away with in a Diesel car?

The safe answer is none. However you might be able to get away with a very low contamination ratio. That being said, we always highly recommend draining anything over a 5% contamination ratio asap.

I know about petrol in diesel, but what about Super Unleaded?

Answer

Putting Super Unleaded, or Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate Unleaded, etc, will have the exact same effect as putting regular unleaded petrol in your diesel car and will need to be drained out and flushed.

Will getting you to do a fuel drain void my warranty?

Answer

No! The EU Block Exemption Regulations clearly state that "the work can be carried out by as long as that garage uses manufacturer approved parts and correctly follows the manufacturer's service schedule."

Can I top it up with Diesel and add some 2-stroke oil?

Answer

This might work on some vehicles in some cases, but in the majority on instances it won't and you risk damaging the Lambda sensors as well as fuel pump and injectors, just as a regular misfuel.
