BMW Fuel Drain

ABOUT

Putting Petrol in a Diesel BMW is a fairly typical problem. And exactly what you need to do about it is based on a number of things. Assuming you would like to know what it is advisable to do to sort it out then keep on reading.
Here are the key variables to be aware of when deciding whether to get a fuel drain:

  1. How much Petrol did you put into the BMW, bearing in mind that the fuel tank capacity of the BMW M550d xDrive is usually about 70 litres?
    1. A tiny amount of Petrol, something like 3.5 litres of Petrol in a Diesel M550d xDrive will in most cases not be a significant problem. Experience has taught us that anything less than 3.5 litres (which is 5% of the total fuel tank) is quite often able to be sufficiently diluted by means of entirely topping the remainder of the tank with Diesel.
It's relatively uncommon to come across a car or truck going through difficulties with less than 5% wrong fuel contamination. Bear in mind that it is rare - not impossible to encounter. There are actually a few motor vehicles that won't endure any level of contamination in the slightest.
    2. In between 3.5 and 7 litres of Petrol in the BMW (5 to 10%) is more of a 50/50 situation. Our experience has revealed that as many motorists get away with this as those people who don't. When deciding on whether to risk it and simply top it up remember that it is very much like wagering your car on black - you will have a 50/50 possibility of it working.
    3. Anything more than 7 litres of Petrol in your Diesel M550d xDrive must as soon as possible be drained because your likelihood of getting away with this level of contamination is very likely less than one in 50 - definitely big odds.
  2. Put Petrol in a Diesel BMW and drove it: Have you seen any performance troubles ever since putting the bad fuel in the M550d xDrive? If so, have it removed irrespective of the volume of Petrol or the contamination percentage. Still driving a car that is already starting to suffer the effects of wrong fuel contamination will probably only lead to more and more harm being caused to your fuel system.
  3. Do you need assurance?
In that case get it emptied. Regardless of the contamination percentage, there is inevitably some extent of danger associated with driving a Diesel vehicle on fuel contaminated with Petrol. Probable outcomes of driving a vehicle on the incorrect fuel can include the motor refusing to start, running unevenly, decrease in power, degradation of the high-pressure pump, damaged or blocked injectors, and the like. These are some of the most common Petrol in Diesel warning signs, and should you observe any of them then stop driving and get it removed right now.

Putting Super Unleaded, or Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate Unleaded, etc, will have the exact same effect as putting regular unleaded petrol in your diesel car and will need to be drained out and flushed.

Will getting you to do a fuel drain void my warranty?

Answer

No! The EU Block Exemption Regulations clearly state that "the work can be carried out by as long as that garage uses manufacturer approved parts and correctly follows the manufacturer's service schedule."

Can I top it up with Diesel and add some 2-stroke oil?

Answer

This might work on some vehicles in some cases, but in the majority on instances it won't and you risk damaging the Lambda sensors as well as fuel pump and injectors, just as a regular misfuel.
