# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Aber-Arad: Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It

Stop here a minute if the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Aber-Arad.

Reading in advance? In that case the rest covers why it happens and how to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds your engine — but many newer diesels driven round Aber-Arad and Llandyfriog carry another liquid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas and cleans it.

There is a filler for every tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, usually from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between them.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Aber-Arad?

Carelessness seldom explains it. What does is three things coming up together.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Stryd y Felin, perhaps at The Coopers Arms on the way home after work.

Then the car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Aber-Arad or out in Newcastle Emlyn.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Danyrhelyg or a forecourt around Aber-Arad.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Trust the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Check inside the fuel flap: many motors have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Cannot see it next to your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or inside the boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you pick up a rental or company car — at the nearest station's car park, say — not once the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

For the day the light comes on — wherever you are in Carmarthenshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Not in a rush on the side of Heol Arad, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two share a flap, make sure it is shut before lifting the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Aber-Arad?

The short order of things, beginning with no starting the engine.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

The attendants at Texaco, Nisa Local or any forecourt will usually lend a hand to push your car clear when you ask.

If you are on your own drive around Aber-Arad, leave it where it sits.

When your engine has been run already, stop somewhere safe then turn it off.

Aber-Arad sits under 50 miles from the M4; there, use the next exit.

A short hop across Aber-Arad is a smaller job than a run towards St Davids, under 50 miles away, and so tell us about how far it went.

## What occurs when our engineers arrive in Aber-Arad

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether by the local primary school, beside Helen Elliott or at home, the van comes to it.

The answers settle this work and our price, and so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

No one heads out until you have had the price over the phone.

The fuel system is then purged thoroughly, once that tank is drained.

With AdBlue that counts more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

We don't go until it has been started and is running properly.

If your engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.
