# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Abercanaid? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your engine off and keep the ignition off.

Urea mixed in water is what AdBlue is.

The trouble begins once it is pulled through your pump — it won't burn, and it will not combine with diesel.

In Abercanaid, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before your engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, just where the car is.

Before anything, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Abercanaid: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

- Remove the keys, and that prevents anyone turning the power on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is at all near.

- So you can give us which liquid it was and roughly what quantity, save the receipt or the empty bottle.

- Ring right where you are. Quote a CF48 1 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to search for you.

Not to do:

- No starting the motor — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.

- Don't switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel — it separates out — so adding more diesel won't weaken it.

- Even a short way along Church View is too far to drive the vehicle.

- Emptying your tank on your own beside the road is not one to try.

Ask the attendants to help you roll your car off the pumps if you are at a forecourt in Abercanaid, whether it's the Applegreen or somewhere else.

On your own drive, don't move it at all.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the fumes.

No part inside a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of that was meant to travel through one.

It doesn't combine. Once it is poured into the tank, AdBlue behaves nothing like diesel.

Heavier than diesel, it sinks and collects underneath it — the same place the pickup sucks from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Ffos-y-fran last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water evaporates, it leaves urea that crystallises in filter elements and narrow channels; and, because it eats at some metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it remains in there.

A vehicle left standing in Abercanaid with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank isn't.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a separate form of damage.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more significant than petrol

Petrol put into a diesel on Esso's forecourt leaves the fuel thin — that is the main issue.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's in the tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running your motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot just be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, because it separates again — and the following fill will not clear away deposits or corrosion. So the flush matters for more here, and trying the engine "to see", in the centre of Abercanaid or out in Ysgubor Newydd, costs more than nearly any other error.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Emptying a tank is the easiest job on any fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue remains in it — anywhere around Merthyr Tydfil your car has stopped.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Abercanaid: how it ends up there

It is not deliberate. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and mixing them up is simple in poor light.

It usually takes place at home, from a container grabbed en route home, not at the forecourt.

It tends to happen in a few familiar ways.

Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up the vehicle.

A driver pours the bottle in outside their house, just off Chapel Street, as the day ends.

Else, in dim light by the pub in the village, your car is refilled by someone using that flap for the first time.

The least known cars see it the most — hire cars, new ones, fleet cars, and the other vehicle in a family with both fuels.

Anywhere around Merthyr Tydfil, Abercanaid as well, the slip doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it switched off.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Abercanaid?

Then the AdBlue has left the tank.

It has been pulled through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

You may see the engine running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Troedyrhiw Park or halfway across Abercanaid.

When you safely can, pull over then turn everything off — without turning it on again to see.

Each start pulls more of it through.

Abercanaid lies under 15 miles from the M4; if you were on it, exit by the first junction and pull up safely rather than carrying on.

Hopping across Abercanaid to the car park by Ss Peter & Paul Church is one matter; heading for Newport, under 25 miles away, is something else, because each mile pushes the AdBlue further in. So mileage matters.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to rinse out once the motor has run, and we do all of it where the car has ended up.

When it is spotted soon, lasting damage is very rare.

## Abercanaid: how AdBlue is drained from a diesel

A road beside Twyn Community Hub, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: wherever the car has come to rest in Abercanaid, our engineers come to it.

What got in, about the quantity, and if your motor has turned over: our technicians ask before all else, since those shape the work.

Next, emptying that tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the whole system is flushed right through since residue won't wash out by itself.

Next, the fuel filter: flushed, or replaced if it has to be. Then fresh diesel, and then a test of your vehicle.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs where the motor has not run.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and safe on a busy forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Lastly, your system is primed with fresh diesel.

Whether it's a parking bay at Pentre-Bach or a drive in Abercanaid, that is where our technicians fire it up and you set off.

The test before we leave is that it runs properly on new diesel.

No garage is needed at any point, with the whole job done then and there.

Afterwards, there is the paperwork for your insurer: a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Abercanaid: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, so not one single price is honest.

Three things change the cost: whether the motor has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where the car is. That last one comes down to whether our van can reach it safely, and an open driveway is easier than a tight spot behind St John's Church.

That's why every call from Abercanaid starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and if it has run.

Given those replies, the range shrinks to one fixed figure.

Before a van heads out, you are told the price by phone. And you pay on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
