# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Acle? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, keep your engine off and leave your ignition off.

Urea dissolved in water is all AdBlue is.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does begins when the system pulls it in.

If the motor hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully rinsed where your car stands in Acle.

Nothing comes before ringing 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps straight away, Acle: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Things to do:

- Pocket the keys, and that stops anyone switching the electrics on.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere close.

- Which product, and about how much volume? Save the bottle or your receipt, and we will know.

- Tell us a postcode starting NR13 3, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van finds you directly — so ring wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll the vehicle: your engine stays off.

- Do not switch your ignition on. On many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, even a short distance along Old Road.

- Do not try to drain it yourself by the roadside.

Ask the attendants to help you roll your vehicle off the pumps if you are at a forecourt around Acle, whether it is the BP or somewhere else.

At your own drive, don't move it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in your motor.

From a dedicated reservoir it goes directly to the exhaust, cleaning what your engine lets out.

Not one side fits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and a pump can't take urea.

Inside a diesel tank it acts very differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of your tank, and that is exactly where AdBlue settles: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

When your system runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it waits underneath the diesel, which is how a vehicle topped up in Moulton St Mary last night and not started stays the straightforward one, as long as nobody touches the key.

After it is pulled in, the damage takes two forms.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it gets to for as long as it remains there.

A vehicle left sitting around Acle with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue just in its tank is not.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running through them, and so the water content harms them by itself.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more significant than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that is the whole fault.

No damage is done as long as it stays put, blended into the diesel — only when your motor runs on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong liquid.

Because it doesn't burn, running it through isn't an option.

It does not stay mixed, and so it can't be thinned. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Tunstall or the middle of Acle.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If the engine has not run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and that tank is the simplest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever in Norfolk your car is sitting.

## Acle: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

No one means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of cars rests right next to your diesel filler, occasionally under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Most of the time it takes place with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the drive, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways account for most cases.

Hurrying, outside Acle Church of England Primary Academy, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, a parent refills your car.

Near The Street, someone tips a bottle in at home in the evening.

Otherwise, after dark by The Kings Head Inn, your car gets topped up by someone opening that flap for the first time.

It comes up most in a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the other motor in a home with both fuels — the vehicles drivers use least.

An identical slip, an identical first step — leave it switched off — anywhere you are around Acle or the remainder of Norfolk.

## Acle: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Then the AdBlue has left your tank.

Given any running time, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed through the filter and lines.

You may see the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, maybe on the way back from Oaks Meadow Play Area or halfway across Acle.

Pull over when it is safe. Turn off. Keep it off rather than testing it again.

Every start pulls more of that through.

Leave the M11, over 50 miles from Acle, at the next junction and park somewhere safe, rather than driving on.

A quick hop across Acle to the car park by Acle Village Sign is one thing; driving towards Norwich, under 15 miles away, is another, because each mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. So mileage counts.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to clean out once the engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where your car has stopped.

Spotted quickly, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Acle?

A street by The Brian Grint Centre, a driveway, a layby or a filling station: anywhere the car has come to rest in Acle, we travel to it.

Three replies decide the work, and so first our engineers ask which fluid went in, about the amount, and whether the engine has turned over.

On the spot, that tank is then emptied, and all of the contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one.

A full flush counts far more after AdBlue than with petrol, because residue won't wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Engine not run? Then expect roughly half an hour on site for most jobs.

Quiet enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a busy forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

Last, the system is bled with fresh diesel.

Whether it is a parking bay by the nearest station or a driveway around Acle, that is where our engineers fire it up and you set off.

The check before our technicians go is that it runs properly on fresh diesel.

No workshop is required at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once this job is done.

## Acle and Norfolk: AdBlue drains across the area

The vans that answer AdBlue calls around Acle also cover the locations around it, Damgate, Upton Green and Upton among them, and most of Norfolk beyond, across the NR postcode area.

Phone and ask instead of guessing when you are by a county line, or anywhere tricky to pin down.

Anywhere the vehicle stands — your drive at home, a residential street, a car park, a filling station — our engineers empty it there, and there's no need to bring it to us; that suits Acle, a village, well.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Acle

No single price would be honest, since every job differs.

Three things move the price: whether the engine has run and for how long, how much AdBlue went in, and where your car is. That last one rests on whether a van can reach it safely, and an open drive is easier than a tight space behind Acle Methodist Church.

Before any quote, never afterwards, every call from Acle begins with three questions: the fuel, the quantity, plus whether the engine ran.

With those replies, the range narrows to one fixed number.

Before a van heads out, you hear our quote on the phone. Then payment is on the day, card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Still next to the car in Acle?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it has run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, in Acle or anywhere across Norfolk.
