# Avoiding AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Addlestone: Why It Occurs

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page down for now, keep the ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your engine has not turned, it is emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle is around Addlestone.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds the motor — but plenty of modern diesels seen round Addlestone and Wey Meadows hold a second fluid too.

Your exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue ends up: dosed into the fumes to clean them, from a separate tank.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is topped up at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and usually by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Addlestone: how it takes place

Carelessness seldom explains it. Instead is three things coming up together.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and letting it run out means limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Brighton Road, or at The Holly Tree on the way home that evening.

The old car's cap is where the hand goes — yet a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: an unfamiliar car.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Addlestonemoor or the heart of Addlestone: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Be it a Addlestone forecourt or a drive out in Rowhill, take a couple of seconds over these before anything is poured in.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally aren't.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it next to your diesel filler? Then look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Surrey that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Church Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, but it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the vehicle on.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never came off.

Discover during the second or third step that AdBlue went into the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Stage five stays out.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Addlestone already?

Brief list, then. Top of that: your motor stays off.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so do not switch it on.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of the tank, right where the fuel is taken from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it's the Tesco or the Shell, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the pump.

If you're on your own drive in Addlestone, leave the vehicle where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Come off the M25 — under a mile out of Addlestone — at the first exit.

Distance matters — a short hop across Addlestone makes a smaller job than driving under 25 miles to Westminster — so say about how far it went.

## Addlestone: what happens when we turn up

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Darley Dene Primary School, near Addlestone Baptist Church or on your own driveway.

What fluid got in, the amount, and if it ran: we ask since those answers set the work and quote.

The quote comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and neither washes out by itself. That is why it matters more.

A test comes last: before that, clean diesel is added, and the filter is flushed or replaced if necessary.

Then we fire it up and check it runs smoothly before we leave.

Most jobs are finished in roughly half an hour after we get there, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to look at yours.
