# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Aghagallon? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave the engine off and keep the ignition off.

Urea mixed in water is all AdBlue is.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and never combines with diesel; trouble only starts when the pump starts pulling it.

Caught before the engine has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Aghagallon.

Nothing comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Aghagallon

Do:

- So nobody can turn the ignition on, pull your keys away.

- If you're anywhere near moving traffic, put the hazard lights on.

- The empty bottle or the receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, so don't throw it out.

- Tell us a postcode starting BT67 0, or whatever street is closest, and our van finds you directly — so call from wherever you are.

Never do these:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll the car: the engine remains off.

- Your ignition remains off: on many diesels, switching it on is enough to start your pump.

- Pouring in more diesel doesn't work: AdBlue settles out rather than blending.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short distance along Heugh Road.

- No emptying it yourself, at all, on the roadside.

The staff on duty at any Aghagallon forecourt — the the nearest petrol station included — will normally lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; the exhaust is.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it is fed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the gas.

A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to travel through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

The first thing your fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Lower Ballinderry last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

What is left once the water goes is urea, which forms crystals: they settle in narrow passages and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and carries on until it's flushed out.

By daybreak, a vehicle sitting around Aghagallon with AdBlue through its pipework gets worse; if it's only inside the tank, nothing changes.

Water lubricates nothing. The high-pressure pump and every injector need diesel running through them, so the water part damages them in its own right.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger issue?

A fault of thin fuel is what you get from filling a diesel with petrol from the another forecourt nearby.

Blended into the diesel and sitting unused, it's no threat at that stage; running the engine does the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Since it does not burn, running it through isn't an option.

Deposits and corrosion stay after the next fill, and AdBlue separates back from your diesel, and so thinning it won't work. That is why the flush counts more, and trying your engine "to see" costs more here than nearly any other mistake — in Magheralin or the heart of Aghagallon alike.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Never run? Then the AdBlue sits only in that tank, the simplest bit of the entire system to empty, wherever your car has come to rest across County Down.

## Aghagallon: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

It's not on purpose. Plenty of cars have the AdBlue cap alongside the diesel one, occasionally under one flap, and mixing them up is easy in poor light.

It usually occurs at home, from a container bought en route home, not at the filling station.

Usually, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

The refill gets rushed outside the local primary school, after your dash lit up with a warning as the kids were taken off.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off South Crescent.

Else, in dim light by the pub in the village, your vehicle is refilled by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

Rented motors, new vehicles, company cars, or the second vehicle in a home with one of each: the least familiar cars get it most.

Keep it off: that's the first step to the same slip, wherever in Aghagallon or the remainder of County Down you happen to be.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Aghagallon, and the engine started?

Then that tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

It has been pulled through the fuel filter and your lines, and if your engine ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: each may show up, perhaps part way across Aghagallon or returning from the green space at the edge of the village.

Pull over when safe. Turn off. Keep it off instead of testing it again.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

If you were on the M77, over 50 miles from Aghagallon, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere sensible instead of pressing on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into the system. That's why a hop across Aghagallon to park near the centre and a drive of under 15 miles towards Lisburn are very separate jobs.

Approximately how far had it come? Tell us.

There's more to flush once the engine has been started, and our engineers do all of it where the car has stopped.

Very rarely does it leave permanent damage if it is noticed early.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Aghagallon: what it takes

The vehicle stays where it is, whether that's a street near a street just off the centre, a drive, a layby or a filling station in Aghagallon, and our van travels to it.

Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and if the engine has been run, since those replies determine the work.

Right there, your tank is then emptied, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out at once.

The fuel system is purged thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is flushed — or swapped, when it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

If your engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

The pumping gear is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no problem, and it is hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that's the final step.

You set off as soon as we have started it, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a drive around Aghagallon or in a bay by the nearest station.

It's tested on new diesel to be sure it runs correctly before we go.

As the job is done in full where the car is, a garage never comes into it.

Your insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over once the job is done.

Phone and check rather than guess if you're close to a county line, or anywhere awkward to explain.

No moving is needed. In Aghagallon, a small village, a van that comes to you works: the car is emptied where it stands, be it in a driveway, a side street, a car park or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Aghagallon

Each job differs, so not one fixed price would be honest.

What moves the cost is, firstly, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where your car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind the far end of the built-up part.

Before any quote, never after, every call from Aghagallon begins with the same three questions: the fuel, the amount, and if the engine ran.

With them, a range shrinks to one firm figure.

The price is given during the call, before anyone leaves; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.

## Next to the vehicle in Aghagallon, right now?

Then, do nothing — that is the best move there is.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Petrol in Diesel takes over the remainder, across Aghagallon or wherever in County Down, once you ring 0333 366 0103 saying it's AdBlue, roughly what quantity, and if it ran.
