# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ainley Top: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page aside a moment, keep your ignition and engine off, and call 0333 366 0103.

Usually, when your engine has not turned, it's emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle is around Ainley Top.

Not happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it occurs and the how to prevent it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of newer diesels around Rosemount, as well as Ainley Top, run on two liquids; your motor gets just the diesel.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue goes: sprayed into the gas to clean it, from a separate tank.

There's a filler on every tank.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both side by side behind one flap.

Diesel gets filled on every filling station call-out, again and again.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

It's in that gap that the mistake lives.

## Ainley Top: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and running out means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Grimescar Road, perhaps at Birchencliffe Cricket Club on the way home after work.

Then, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and after the pour begins, no part stops it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Ainley Top or out in Birchencliffe.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Be it a Ainley Top forecourt or a drive over in Lindley, spend a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

- Check the cap instead of going by where it sits: AdBlue ones are often blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- The size. On many cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Open the flap and look for a label — many cars show what goes in which inlet right there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park outside Huddersfield? Ask the person who drove the car last before leaving, rather than once the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around West Yorkshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Burn Road, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Silly, yes, but it does the trick.

- Both under one flap? Then make sure the lid on your diesel filler stays shut ahead of lifting the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap, and look again — making sure your diesel cap remained shut the whole time. Only then, start the vehicle.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Skip stage five altogether.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, in Ainley Top?

Do not start your motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

Leave the ignition off as well, because on plenty of diesels switching it on alone runs the pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it's the The co-operative or the Crossleys Garage, ask the attendants to help push the vehicle away from the pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Ainley Top.

Already started? Pull over when it is sensible, then switch off.

The next junction means the place to come off when you are on the M62, under a mile from Ainley Top.

A short hop across Ainley Top is a smaller job than a run towards Bradford, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Ainley Top: what happens when we turn up

Our van comes to the car wherever it has come to rest — your own driveway, beside St Philip the Apostle, or outside Lindley Church of England Infant School.

Which fluid went in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask because the answers decide both work and quote.

During the phone call itself, you hear our price — ahead of anything else.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

The filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

Before we leave, we fire it up and check that it's running smoothly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once we arrive, as long as your motor hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

Payment is on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents your insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It's worth checking your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with plenty of policies.
