# Airy Hill: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Pause here for a moment when your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the engine hasn't turned, it's drained and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle is in Airy Hill.

Reading before the event? Then the rest explains why it comes about and how to stop it ever happening.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Airy Hill and High Stakesby carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the engine.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it is sent to your exhaust, where a spray treats the fumes.

Each tank has a filler of its own.

Some vehicles keep the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; a lot of others have both side by side under one flap.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between the two.

## Airy Hill: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

Haste follows from the warning. Your car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Larpool Lane, or on the way home in the car park outside Bridge Inn.

Unfamiliar vehicles are second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Nothing halts the pour once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Ruswarp or the heart of Airy Hill: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A few seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Sneaton or a forecourt in Airy Hill.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap doesn't. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many cars show which goes in which inlet just there.

- The handbook says which it lives when your filler is not next to your diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Ruswarp, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

Wherever across North Yorkshire the light comes on, this is a routine for that day.

- Switch off after you park — flat ground, motor stopped, and not rushed beside Glen Esk Road on the verge.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have located your filler and read it.

- If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Discover during the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the wrong filler? That is where you stop.

Skip step five altogether.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Airy Hill already?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the engine.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, since AdBlue settles to the base rather than mixing — and that is where your fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you are on a forecourt — the Ruswarp Service Station, the Shell or anywhere else.

On your own drive in Airy Hill? Then the vehicle stays where it is.

If the engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the A1(M), under 50 miles from Airy Hill, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Airy Hill is smaller work than a run of under 50 miles towards York, and so say.

## Airy Hill: what takes place when our engineers get there

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Ruswarp Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, close to Ruswarp Village Hall or on your own drive.

Those replies settle the work and the quote, so we ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run.

That price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out unaided. Hence it matters more.

Filter cleaned or, if it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; then a test of your car.

We do not leave until it has been fired up and is running correctly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs where your engine hasn't run need about half an hour once we are there.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains across North Yorkshire, Airy Hill included

Over YO postcodes, the vans that cover Airy Hill — a coastal area — work the nearby locations too, Whitby and Fishburn Park included.

Give a postcode that starts YO22 4, and our van gets there quickest.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

Wherever it stands — near Brother William, in a lay-by heading to Whitehall Woods, at home — that's where it is drained.

Ring and ask instead of assuming if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Whitby Cemetery.

## The short version for Airy Hill drivers

Before you pour, read the cap.

AdBlue in your diesel tank regardless? Keep it off then phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, across North Yorkshire.
