# Aldbrough: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, leave the engine off then keep the ignition off.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

The trouble begins once it's sucked through your pump — it won't ignite, and it won't combine with diesel.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Aldbrough, is normally all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before the engine has run.

Before you do anything else, call 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Aldbrough

To do:

- So no one can turn your ignition on, pull the keys out.

- Close to moving traffic? So put the hazards on.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, and so you can tell us what got in and roughly how much.

- Tell us a postcode starting HU11 4, or whichever street lies nearest, and our van reaches you straight — so call wherever you are.

Do not:

- No starting your motor — not briefly, not to shift the vehicle.

- Switching your key to ignition alone sets the pump going on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- AdBlue does not dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra fuel won't weaken it.

- Keep it where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way along Church Street.

- No emptying it yourself, either, at the verge.

The attendants on duty at any Aldbrough filling station — the Pace among them — will normally help pushing it aside if you ask.

On your own driveway, do not move it at all.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it's fed into the exhaust, and there it cleans the fumes.

A fuel pump isn't designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

It doesn't blend. After it's poured into a tank of diesel, AdBlue behaves nothing like fuel.

Denser than diesel, it sinks and collects below it — the same spot the pickup draws from.

A vehicle filled on a drive in Fitling overnight and left unstarted is the simple one. Nothing has sucked the AdBlue up so far — but when your motor turns, that's what goes first, straight from the bottom of the tank.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

It eats at some metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches till it's cleared from the system. And once the water goes, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in tiny channels.

If the AdBlue is in the pipework, leaving it overnight in Aldbrough leaves things worse. In the tank alone, waiting does nothing.

The water in it does harm of its own: your high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water gives them nothing.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it is often worse than petrol

Fill a diesel with petrol by mistake over at the Murco, and this problem is thinned fuel.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Blended into the diesel and left in your tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

Whether the car sits in Humbleton or the centre of Aldbrough, firing it up "to see" does more harm with AdBlue than nearly any other error, and the flush counts for more. Why: it won't remain mixed, and so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the next tankful.

As with petrol, there's good news.

Anywhere around East Riding of Yorkshire the vehicle has come to rest, an unstarted engine leaves the AdBlue yet inside the reservoir: the simplest bit of a fuel system to empty.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Aldbrough

It's not on purpose. Many cars keep the AdBlue cap beside the diesel inlet, occasionally under one flap, and muddling them up is simple after dark.

Usually it is never the filling station: a driver buys a container driving home and tips it in at home.

The ways it takes place are few and familiar.

Rushing, outside Aldbrough Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone tops up the car.

Near Cross Street, someone pours a container in at home after work.

Else, in dim light by Elm Tree, the car gets refilled by a driver opening that flap for the first time.

Hired vehicles, brand-new vehicles, fleet cars, or the spare car in a home with one of each: the least familiar cars see it most.

Anywhere across East Riding of Yorkshire, Aldbrough included, the mistake doesn't change, and nor does the first step: leave it off.

## Aldbrough: started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

The filter and pipework have had it sucked along, and some running time carries it on to the high-pressure pump and every injector.

Maybe returning from Fox Covert, or part way across Aldbrough, your engine may run rough, smoke, lose pace, light up your dash or stall.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

Each start pulls more of it through.

On the M180, under 25 miles from Aldbrough, the next junction is where to exit, and anywhere safe is where to stop — not carrying on.

Mileage counts: every mile carries the AdBlue deeper into your system, and so driving towards Kingston upon Hull, under 15 miles away, gives a much larger job than crossing Aldbrough to the car park by St Bartholomew's Church.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever your car came to a halt is where all of it gets done, even with more to rinse out once the engine has been started.

Spotted early, it very seldom leaves long-term damage.

## Aldbrough: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

A street beside Garton Methodist Chapel, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: anywhere the vehicle has stopped around Aldbrough, we come to it.

Before anything else we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has been run, because those replies decide the work.

Right there, that tank is then emptied, and both the contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one.

A full flush counts much more after AdBlue than with petrol, because residue will not clear away on its own.

Fresh diesel goes in after your filter is cleaned — or replaced, when it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

If the engine has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt safe to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the neighbours at night.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed your system, and that is the last step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, outside Hull or on a driveway around Aldbrough.

It's checked on clean diesel to be sure it runs properly before our technicians go.

No workshop is required at any point, with the entire job done on the spot.

Insurers want a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

Guessing doesn't help by a county line or anywhere hard to pin down; ring and ask.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Aldbrough

Each job is different, and so no fixed price would be fair.

Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what moves the cost. How much AdBlue got in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, because an open drive is easier for our van to reach safely than a tight gap behind St. Peter's Humbleton.

For that in mind, every enquiry from Aldbrough begins with the identical trio — what got in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of any quote.

Once they are known, a range turns into one firm figure.

Our quote is quoted during the call, before a van sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While the van is on the way, check your insurance: many cover misfuelling.

## In Aldbrough and still beside the car?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to your car.
