# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Aldbury

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? In that case set this page down a moment, leave your ignition and motor off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Aldbury.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page explains the why it happens and the how to avoid it for good.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels around Norcott Hill, as well as Aldbury, run on two fluids; your engine gets just the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there spraying treats the gas.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both side by side under one flap.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side gets filled constantly.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side gets topped up — normally from a bottle, by a person thinking about where it goes.

It's in that gap that the slip lives.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Aldbury: how it happens

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and running out leads to limp mode — hence a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Trooper Road, perhaps at The Greyhound Inn on the way home that evening.

Next, your hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — since a rental car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as easily, and once the tip begins, nothing halts it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Aldbury or out in Barley End.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Pitstone Hill or a forecourt around Aldbury.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on many motors, the AdBlue one.

- Open the flap and check for a label — many vehicles mark what goes in each inlet just there.

- Cannot see it beside your diesel filler? Then check below the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual will say which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Tring.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Hertfordshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Toms Hill Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park then switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- The two under one flap? So make sure the cap on your diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Never go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Aldbury?

Do not start your engine: that's how the short order of things begins.

Do not switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: instead, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

If you are at a forecourt, whether it is the Texaco or the Shell, ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Aldbury.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if your motor has already run.

Come off the M1 — under 10 miles out of Aldbury — at the next exit.

A short hop across Aldbury is a smaller job than a run towards St Albans, under 15 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## When our technicians get there in Aldbury, what happens?

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Aldbury Church of England Primary and Nursery School, near Aldbury Memorial Hall or on your own drive.

Our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run, since those replies decide the work and our quote.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out.

Then that tank is emptied and the fuel system rinsed thoroughly.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

Testing comes at the end: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel filter is flushed or replaced as needed.

We don't go until it has been started and is running smoothly.

Unrun cars usually need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It's worth checking your insurance as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

If you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of St John the Baptist, ring and ask instead of assuming.
