# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Aldercar: How It Happens and How to Prevent It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and your ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if the engine hasn't run, it is drained and thoroughly cleaned where the vehicle is around Aldercar.

If you're reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it happens and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels in Heanor, like those in Aldercar, carry on two fluids; the engine gets just the diesel.

The exhaust, not the motor, is where AdBlue ends up: sprayed into the fumes to fresh them, from its own tank.

Each tank has its own filler.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the layout on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in on each filling station visit, week in, week out.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue usually comes from a bottle, poured by a driver who has to stop and think which filler it needs.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Aldercar: how AdBlue in the diesel tank happens

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Lower Dunstead Road before work, or in the car park outside Inn the Middle heading home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then the vehicle is new. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Nothing stops the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Langley Mill or the heart of Aldercar: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Bailey Grove or a forecourt around Aldercar, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook shows which it lives when the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Langley Mill.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Wherever across Derbyshire the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Switch off once parked — flat ground, motor off, and not rushed beside George Street on the verge.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Never go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Aldercar?

The short order of things, beginning with not starting your engine.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — Asda, Esso or another — the staff will usually help roll your car away, when you ask.

On your own drive around Aldercar? So the car remains where it is.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

On the M1, under 5 miles from Aldercar, that means the next exit.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Aldercar makes a smaller job than driving under 10 miles towards Derby — so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when our technicians turn up around Aldercar

Wherever the car came to rest, whether outside Langley Mill Church of England Infant School and Nursery, beside St John's Church or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

Which fluid went in, the quantity, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the replies set the work and quote.

On the phone call itself, you hear the price — ahead of dispatch.

Then that tank is drained and the system cleaned thoroughly.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes away by itself. Hence it matters more.

Once the filter is flushed — or renewed, where required — fresh diesel goes in, and finally your car gets tested.

The motor is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs properly, all before our technicians go.

With pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor has not run need about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your policy; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

Give a postcode that starts NG16 4, and the van arrives quickest.

Shifting the vehicle is not necessary.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Aldercar Recreation Ground, a side street near Langley Mill Baptist Church: our technicians drain the vehicle where it sits.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, ring and ask instead of guessing.

## Aldercar motorists: the short version

Pour nothing till you've read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Keep the vehicle switched off then ring 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, across Derbyshire.
