# Why It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Aldergrove

Leave the motor and ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Caught before your motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Aldergrove.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page explains the reasons it happens and the how to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that is how many modern diesels around Aldergrove and Antrim run, with diesel feeding the motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled on every forecourt call-out, again and again.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, tipped by someone who must stop and think what filler to use.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place around Aldergrove

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the car, and running dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Chalet Road, or outside the pub in the village on the way home after work.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it slides in as easily, and once the tip starts, nothing stops it.

Crumlin or the heart of Aldergrove: it is the same few seconds either way.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a driveway in Dundrod or a forecourt in Aldergrove, check these. They take a few seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap usually is not. Read it instead of going by position.

- On plenty of cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside the diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says where.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside the nearest station? Ask the person who drove it last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light comes on — wherever you are across County Antrim — a simple routine to follow.

- Switch off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush by North Crescent at the roadside.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — and leave the car on.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the vehicle: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went into the wrong tank? That is where you stop.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Aldergrove?

Brief order, then. Top of it: the engine remains unstarted.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or another forecourt will usually lend a hand to push your car away if asked.

Your own drive around Aldergrove is where it should stay.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M77, over 50 miles from Aldergrove, that means the next exit.

A short hop across Aldergrove is a smaller job than a run towards Lisburn, under 15 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Aldergrove: what happens when our engineers get there

The van comes to the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own driveway, near the centre, or outside the local primary school.

Both the work and the price rest on three answers — what liquid, what amount, and if it's run — so we ask.

No one sets off until you've heard the price by phone.

Next: draining, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own.

After the fuel filter is cleaned — or renewed, where needed — clean diesel goes in, and then your car is tested.

The engine is started next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before our technicians head off.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour once our technicians get there, as long as your motor has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt yet quiet at night beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours while we are on the way.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to a street just off the centre, a lay-by on the way to the green space at the edge of the village, a driveway.

Assuming doesn't help at the back of the far end of the built-up part, on a boundary, or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and check.
