# Why It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Aldridge

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, keep your ignition and engine off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Aldridge.

Here before the event? In that case what follows explains how it happens and what to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Aldridge and Mill Green carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Its own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying treats the gas.

There is a filler on every tank.

Plenty of motors share a single flap for the two, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less frequently, usually from a bottle, and normally by somebody who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place in Aldridge

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up together.

On a driveway off Anchor Road before work, or in the car park outside The Crown on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car warns you, and once it's empty, limp mode kicks in.

Then the vehicle is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the pour once it has started.

Leighswood or the heart of Aldridge: it is the same few seconds in both.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Aldridge forecourt or a drive over in Vigo, take a few seconds over these before any is poured in.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Blake Street.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

Wherever in West Midlands the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Little Aston Road.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have found the filler and read it.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two share a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop just there.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Aldridge: already put AdBlue in your diesel tank?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your motor.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from.

If you are on a forecourt, whether it is the Esso or the Shell, ask the staff to help push your car clear of the pump.

On your own drive in Aldridge? So the car stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

The next junction means where to leave when you are on the M6 Toll, under 5 miles from Aldridge.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Aldridge makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles to Lichfield — so say roughly how far it went.

## What takes place when our engineers get there in Aldridge

Outside Cooper and Jordan Church of England Primary School, near Aldridge Shopping Centre or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

What liquid was put in, the amount, and if it ran: our engineers ask since those answers set the work and price.

On the phone call itself, you hear the price — ahead of anything else.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that matters more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Filter cleaned or, if it must be, replaced; clean diesel in; then a test of your vehicle.

We do not go until it has been started and is running correctly.

If the engine hasn't run, most jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you are given the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer report and a VAT invoice.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

## AdBlue drains around Aldridge and across West Midlands

Aldridge is a riverside town, and the teams that cover it also work the towns around it, Barr Common and Stubbers Green among them, across the WS postcode area.

Quickest of all: give a WS9 8 postcode for our van.

Moving your car isn't needed.

Our technicians drain it where it is — a side street close to Aldridge Arena and Banqueting, a lay-by on the way to Garden of Reflection, a drive.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of Colossus Gym? By a county line? Asking is better than assuming, so ring.

## The short version for Aldridge drivers

Tip nothing till you've read the cap.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere across West Midlands, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — and so leave the vehicle off then call 0333 366 0103.
