# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Alexandria: Why It Occurs

Stop reading a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your engine has not run, it is drained and thoroughly flushed where the vehicle sits in Alexandria.

Not happened yet? Below, the rest of the page covers the why it happens and the how to prevent it for good.

## AdBlue in a diesel vehicle: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads about Alexandria and Jamestown carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your motor.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place both side by side under one flap.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

It's in that gap that the error lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Alexandria: how it occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things coincide.

Haste comes from the warning. The vehicle tells you as AdBlue runs low, and a dry tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up happens quickly, before work on a drive off Main Street, or on the way home in the car park outside The Fountain Tavern.

Then the car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the tip, after begun, carries on.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Alexandria or out in Dalmonach.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Ohare or a forecourt around Alexandria.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- On many cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Cannot find it next to the diesel inlet? Then check beneath the bonnet or in the boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Check when you collect a rental or fleet car — at the nearest station's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

For the day the light appears — anywhere you are in West Dunbartonshire — a simple routine to follow.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Bank Street.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap works — once you have located your filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap remains on. When the two sit under a flap, make sure it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Pour slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Stage five stays off limits.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Alexandria?

Short order, then. Top of that: your motor remains unstarted.

Do not switch your ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help push your car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the John H Glen & Son, the BP or anywhere else.

On your own drive around Alexandria? So the vehicle stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your engine has already run.

Come off the M8 — under 5 miles out of Alexandria — at the first exit.

A short hop across Alexandria is a smaller job than a run towards Glasgow, under 25 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## When our engineers get there in Alexandria, what takes place?

Anywhere your car has stopped, be it by the local primary school, beside Smollet Fountain or on your own drive, our van travels to it.

What fluid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask since the answers set the work and price.

On the phone call itself, you are told the price — before dispatch.

Your system is then rinsed thoroughly, once that tank is emptied.

Not like petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and attacks certain fuel-system metals, and none of that clears out by itself. That is why it matters more.

Your filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before we leave, we fire it up and make sure that it's running smoothly.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is fine on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

The insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.

## About Alexandria and where it is

Alexandria is a town situated in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland, with a riverside setting. It is located in a scenic part of the country. The town has a distinct character, set apart from the ancient city of the same name in Egypt. Alexandria in Scotland is a smaller, more local centre.

## AdBlue drains in Alexandria and across West Dunbartonshire

Levenvale and Tullichewan are among the places near Alexandria, a riverside town, that the same vans cover, over G postcodes.

Give a postcode that starts G83 0, and our van arrives quickest.

The vehicle remains where it is.

Anywhere it sits — beside War Memorial, on a lay-by en route to Christie Park, at home — that's where it gets drained.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you are near a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of Our Lady & St Mark's RC Church.

## For Alexandria drivers, the short version

Read the cap before you tip.

Still AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel can empty it where it is, wherever across West Dunbartonshire: switch it off and call 0333 366 0103.
