# Allt-yr-yn: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

Motor off, ignition off: that is how you begin if AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank.

In plain terms, AdBlue is simply urea in water.

As it is water-based, it won't ignite and won't blend with diesel; damage just starts when your pump begins pulling it.

Caught before your engine has been run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Allt-yr-yn.

First, call us on 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank in Allt-yr-yn

Do these:

- Take your keys out, so no one switches your ignition on.

- Near moving traffic? Then put the hazard lights on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt tells us the product and the amount, and so do not throw it out.

- Tell us a postcode starting NP20 5, or whichever street is closest, and our van finds you straight — so ring from wherever you stand.

Never do these:

- Not even for a second, and not to shift your car: your engine remains off.

- Switching the key to ignition by itself sets the pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Any driving at all is to be avoided, even a short stretch up Allt-Yr-Yn Close.

- Don't try to drain it yourself by the roadside.

Rolling your car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Allt-yr-yn forecourt you are on, the Shell included.

On your own drive, don't touch it at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not the motor.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into your exhaust, where it cleans the gas.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is designed to handle it.

Poured in with the diesel, it keeps separate instead of mixing — quite unlike fuel.

It's heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup pulls fuel from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Caerau Park last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

It eats at certain metals found in fuel systems, working on any part it touches until it is removed completely. And once the water evaporates, the urea forms crystals that block filters and settle in narrow passages.

If the AdBlue has reached the lines, waiting overnight in Allt-yr-yn makes things worse. Inside the tank only, time does nothing.

The water in it does damage of its own: your high-pressure pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel regularly the bigger fault?

A fault of thin fuel is what you get from fuelling a diesel with petrol from the Asda.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's in the tank it does no damage; the damage comes from running the motor on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It does not burn, and so it cannot simply be run through.

Nor can it be watered down, because it separates back out — and the following fill won't rinse away crystals or corrosion. So the flush matters more with AdBlue, and turning the key "to see", in the heart of Allt-yr-yn or out in Ridgeway, costs more than almost any other mistake.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Not started? Then the AdBlue waits only inside that tank, the easiest section of the entire system to empty, wherever your vehicle has stopped across Newport.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank in Allt-yr-yn

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap — may look the same. No one means it; many layouts invite it.

Mostly it's not the filling station: someone picks up a bottle heading home and pours it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover most cases.

Rushing, outside the local primary school, after a warning lamp flashed on during the school run, a parent refills your car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Allt-yr-yn Avenue.

Else, in dim light by The Cellar Door, your vehicle is topped up by someone using that flap the first time.

It occurs most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new car, a company car, or the second motor of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Keep it off: that's the first response to an identical mistake, wherever in Allt-yr-yn or the remainder of Newport you happen to be.

## Already started the engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Allt-yr-yn?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

Via the fuel filter, through the pipework, and — with any running time — on to the high-pressure pump and each injector: that is where it has gone.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any may show up, maybe midway across Allt-yr-yn or coming back from The Shrubbery Conservation Area.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart the vehicle to check.

More of it is pulled through with each start.

Allt-yr-yn sits under a mile from the M4; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and stop safely instead of carrying on.

A quick hop across Allt-yr-yn to the car park by Allt-Yr-Yn Tennis Club is one matter; driving towards Newport, under a mile away, is another, since each mile carries the AdBlue further in. So distance counts.

Roughly how far had it come? Tell us.

There is more to rinse out once your engine has been started, and we do all of it where the vehicle has ended up.

When it is noticed quickly, long-term damage is very unusual.

## Allt-yr-yn: how AdBlue is emptied from a diesel

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that is a road near Civic Centre murals, a driveway, a lay-by or a filling station around Allt-yr-yn, and our van travels to it.

Three replies decide the work, so before anything else our engineers ask which fluid went in, roughly what quantity, plus whether the engine has turned over.

Next, draining that tank right there takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue together.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is flushed right through since what remains won't wash away unaided.

Fresh diesel goes in once your filter is cleaned — or swapped, if it needs to be — and after that the vehicle is tested.

About half an hour once we arrive is usual for most jobs when your motor hasn't run.

Our pumping gear is explosion-proof, and so a live filling station is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Clean diesel goes in to bleed the system, and that is the last step.

After that we fire it up and you head off, whether from a parking bay at Newport (South Wales) or a drive in Allt-yr-yn.

The check before our engineers go is that it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

We do it all wherever your car has ended up, and it never has to go to a workshop.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report later, which is what insurers want.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Allt-yr-yn

There's no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same.

The price shifts first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Civic Centre.

That is why every call from Allt-yr-yn starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and whether it's run.

Those replies turn a range into a straight quote.

Quoted by phone before the van sets out, the job is paid for on the day — card or phone, nothing in advance.

Misfuelling cover comes with many insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.
