# How It Happens and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Almondsbury

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and thoroughly rinsed where the vehicle sits in Almondsbury.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels around Patchway, as well as Almondsbury, carry on two fluids; your motor gets just the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there spraying treats the fumes.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Many of cars share a single flap for the two, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

The diesel side is fuelled at the pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less commonly.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Almondsbury: how it takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off Church Road before work, or in the car park at The Bowl Inn heading home: that's where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

New-to-you cars come next, too. Hire cars, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers differently, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

A spout-topped bottle finds no obstacle at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, after started, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Almondsbury or out in Woodhouse Down.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all these take — so check them before you tip anything, on a drive in Tockington or a forecourt around Almondsbury.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps normally do not.

- On plenty of vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: many motors carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- The handbook. If your filler isn't by your diesel cap, it is in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside Patchway.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

When the light goes on, wherever in Gloucestershire, follow this routine.

- Not in a rush on the side of Sundays Hill, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park and switch off first.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It seems daft. It does the trick.

- The diesel cap remains on. When both sit under a flap, make sure it's closed before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, shut the cap and check a second time that the diesel cap was never opened off.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Skip stage five entirely.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Almondsbury?

Don't start the motor: that's how the short order of things begins.

Keep the ignition off as well, since on plenty of diesels switching it on by itself starts the pump.

Filling up with diesel won't weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the BP or the Applegreen, ask the attendants to help push the car clear of the pump.

If you are on your own drive in Almondsbury, leave the car where it stands.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

On the M5, under a mile from Almondsbury, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Almondsbury is smaller a job than a trip of under 10 miles to Bristol, and so tell us.

## When we arrive in Almondsbury, what takes place?

Outside Almondsbury Church of England Primary School, near Almondsbury Old School Village Hall or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Both the work and the quote depend on three replies — what fluid, which amount, and whether it's run — so we ask.

That price is given over the phone, before any van leaves.

Emptying your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of your system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of it washes out unaided. That is why it counts more.

A test is last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or changed as needed.

Then our engineers fire it up and check it runs smoothly before we leave.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour visit from arrival. The equipment is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer are handed to you for your insurer.

It's worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

Awkward to explain, like the back of War Memorial? Close to a county line? Asking beats assuming, so ring.
