# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Alnwick: Why It Happens

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and your ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if your motor hasn't turned, it's drained and fully rinsed where your vehicle is around Alnwick.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Many modern diesels around Hawkhill, as well as Alnwick, run on two fluids; your engine gets just the diesel.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for each tank.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

At the pump, the diesel side is topped up all the time.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, tipped by a driver who has to stop and think what cap to use.

That gap is where the error lives.

## Alnwick: how AdBlue in the diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and if it runs out completely, your vehicle goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Hotspur Street before work, or in the car park at Ye Olde Tanner's Arms on the way home.

The old car's cap is where your hand goes — but a hire car, a new car or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That's the second thing: a strange motor.

No part stops the tip once it has started, since a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Whether it occurs in Freelands or the middle of Alnwick, it is the same few seconds.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Check these first, on a forecourt in Alnwick or a driveway over in Broxfield. Seconds, that's all.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many cars, the AdBlue one.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — plenty of vehicles mark which belongs in which filler just there.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside Alnmouth, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light appears — anywhere it is in Northumberland — a simple routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Roxbro Place, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off properly.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle — then leave the vehicle on.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it is full or when the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Never carry on to stage five.

## Alnwick: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with not starting your engine.

On many diesels your ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Esso, the BP or anywhere else.

Your own driveway in Alnwick is where it stays.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Come off the A167(M) — under 50 miles out of Alnwick — at the next exit.

A short hop across Alnwick is a smaller job than a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 50 miles away, so tell us about how far it went.

## Alnwick: what happens when our engineers turn up

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Swansfield Park Primary School, near Alnwick Library or on your own driveway.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — which fluid, what quantity, and if it's run — so our technicians ask.

No one sets off before you have heard the quote over the phone.

Then the tank is drained and your system rinsed thoroughly.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals build up, certain metals corrode, and none of it washes out on its own, however long it sits.

The filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a check of your car.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Most jobs are done in about half an hour after our engineers arrive, provided the motor has not run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark outside a house.

Paying happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the documents an insurer asks for: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

It is worth checking your policy while we travel to you: misfuelling cover comes with plenty of policies.

## Alnwick and Northumberland: AdBlue drains across the area

Over NE postcodes, the vans covering Alnwick — a riverside town — work the nearby spots too, Rugley and Denwick among them.

A postcode starting NE66 1 gets the van to you fastest.

There's no need to shift your car.

Anywhere it stands — beside St Paul's, on a lay-by heading to St Paul's Memorial Garden, at home — that's where it gets cleared.

Guessing won't help at the back of Salvation Army, on a border, or somewhere hard to pin down; phone and check.

## For Alnwick drivers, the short version

Always, the cap; after that, the pour.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, throughout Northumberland.
