# How It Occurs and How to Avoid It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Angmering

Stop here a minute when the diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

A drain plus a full flush, carried out just where your vehicle sits in Angmering, is normally all it needs when found before the engine runs.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Diesel goes to the motor — yet plenty of newer diesels driven round Angmering and Poling hold another liquid as well.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler on each tank.

Other vehicles put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two side by side behind one flap.

Filling your diesel side at the pump goes on all the time.

A driver who has to stop and work out where it goes normally fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less often.

The error lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank take place around Angmering?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a driveway off High Street before work, or in the car park at The Lamb Inn heading home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and once it is gone, limp mode follows.

New-to-you vehicles come next, too. Hire cars, new motors and company motors place their fillers in new places, and the hand reaches for the cap it used on the old one.

A spouted bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. So the pour, after started, carries on.

The same few seconds settle it, in the middle of Angmering or out in Hammerpot.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Check these first, at a forecourt around Angmering or a drive out in Poling Corner. Seconds, no more.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler is if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver knows. Check as you pick up a hire car or fleet car — from the nearest station's car park, perhaps — not once the warning comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the warning appears — wherever it is across West Sussex — a simple routine to follow.

- Turn off once parked — level ground, motor off, and never in a rush beside Station Road on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it does the trick.

- The two under a single flap? So make sure the cap on the diesel filler is still closed ahead of raising the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Close the cap, then check again — confirm your diesel filler stayed shut the whole time. After that, start the car.

Discover during the second or third step that the bottle went in the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Angmering: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Do not start your motor: that is how the short order of things begins.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that's where the fuel is drawn from.

Ask the staff to help roll the car clear of the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Asda, the BP or anywhere else.

If you're on your own drive around Angmering, leave the car where it stands.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

On the M23, under 25 miles from Angmering, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Hopping across Angmering is smaller a job than a run of under 15 miles towards Chichester, and so tell us.

## Angmering: what happens when we arrive

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside St Wilfrids Catholic Primary School, near War Memorial or on your own driveway.

We ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run, since the answers settle the work and our price.

The price comes on the call, before any van leaves.

Next: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: the crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of that washes out on its own, no matter how long it is left.

Filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; then a check of the car.

Before leaving, we start it and check that it is running correctly.

Unstarted vehicles mostly mean a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The equipment is fine on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway late at night.

No money upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

While we travel, have a look at your insurance documents; plenty carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains across West Sussex, Angmering included

Angmering is a coastal village, and the teams that cover it also work the places around it, East Preston and Hangleton among them, across the BN postcode area.

The van reaches you fastest with a postcode starting BN16 4.

No need to shift the car.

Wherever it stands — near St Nicholas Church, on a layby heading to St Nicholas Garden, at home — that's where it gets drained.

Awkward to explain, like the back of Angmering Library? By a border? Asking beats assuming, so phone.

## For Angmering motorists, the short version

Always, the cap; after that, the pour.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Leave the car off then phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, throughout West Sussex.
