# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Annan? Don't Start It

With AdBlue in the diesel tank, the ignition remains off and so does the engine.

Urea dissolved in water is what AdBlue is.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does starts when your fuel system draws it in.

If the engine has not run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is usually drained and carefully flushed where the car stands in Annan.

Call 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in the diesel tank in Annan

To do:

- So nobody can turn the ignition on, take the keys out.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- So you can give us which fluid it was and about what quantity, keep your receipt or the empty bottle.

- Call right where you are. Say a DG12 6 postcode or the closest street name, and no one has to hunt for you.

Don't:

- Shifting the car even a few yards is no reason to start your engine.

- The ignition remains off: on lots of diesels, turning it on is enough to start the fuel pump.

- AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel — it separates out — so adding extra diesel will not thin it.

- Keep the car where it is instead of driving it anywhere, even a short way along Lady Street.

- No draining it yourself, either, on the verge.

The staff working at any Annan forecourt — the Thames included — will usually lend a hand rolling it aside if you ask.

If you're on your own drive, leave the vehicle just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Not your motor but your exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

Its own reservoir keeps it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it treats the gas.

A fuel pump isn't made to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Newbie last night and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of that tank, undrawn — though it would be first through once the motor runs, ahead of any diesel at all.

From there it does two kinds of harm.

It attacks certain metals found in fuel systems, working on whatever it reaches till it's removed completely. And once the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and settle in tiny channels.

If the AdBlue has reached the pipework, waiting overnight around Annan leaves it worse. In that tank only, time does nothing.

Then there is the water: it offers no protection to the parts that rely on it most — the injection pump and each injector.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger issue?

A problem of thinned fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Tesco.

No harm is done as long as it sits unused, mixed into the diesel — only when the engine works on it.

The trouble with AdBlue in a diesel is a completely wrong substance.

It doesn't burn, so it can't simply be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it cannot be thinned. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Battlehill or the middle of Annan.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

If your motor has not run, the AdBlue is still inside your tank, and the tank is the quickest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Dumfries and Galloway the car is sitting.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Annan: how it ends up there

It is not on purpose. Plenty of vehicles have the AdBlue inlet alongside the diesel inlet, now and then under a single flap, and muddling them up is easy in poor light.

It usually takes place outside the house, from a bottle grabbed en route home, not at the forecourt.

It tends to take place in a couple of familiar ways.

Halfway through the morning drop-off, the dashboard flags it up, and outside Bowness-on-Solway Primary School the refill is rushed.

A driver pours the bottle in outside their house, right off Church Street, as the day ends.

Otherwise, in dim light outside The Shed, your car is topped up by a driver opening that flap the first time.

Rented cars, brand-new vehicles, company cars, or the second vehicle in a family with both fuels: the least familiar vehicles see it most.

Leave it off: that is the first response to an identical slip, wherever around Annan or the rest of Dumfries and Galloway you are.

## Annan: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left the tank, then.

Your filter and lines have had it sucked through, and some running takes it on to the injection pump and every injector.

Lumpy running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each may appear, maybe part way across Annan or coming back from Motte Park.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the car to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

If you were on the A74(M), under 5 miles from Annan, come off at the next junction and stop somewhere safe rather than pressing on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Annan to the car park by Annan Museum is a very different job from a run towards Carlisle, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into the system with each mile.

Tell us roughly how far it had come.

There's more to clean out once the motor has been started, and our technicians do all of it where the vehicle has stopped.

Very seldom does it leave lasting damage if it's spotted soon.

## Annan: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped around Annan: a side street near War Memorial, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three replies shape the job, and so first our engineers ask what got in, roughly what quantity, and if your motor has turned over.

The contaminated diesel and the urea leave as one after your tank is drained, right there.

Residue from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, and so the whole system gets a full flush, which counts much more with urea than for petrol.

Testing your vehicle follows last, after clean diesel goes in and the fuel filter is flushed or, if needed, swapped.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when your engine has not run.

Our equipment is explosion-proof, so a live filling station is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

The final step is to prime your system on clean diesel.

Whether it's a parking bay at the nearest station or a drive in Annan, that is where we start the engine and you head off.

It's checked on fresh diesel to make sure it runs correctly before our engineers go.

No workshop is required at any stage, with the entire job done on the spot.

You get a VAT invoice and an engineer report afterwards, which is what insurers want.

## About Annan itself

## AdBlue drains across Dumfries and Galloway, Annan included

Howes, Welldale and Watchill are among the towns around Annan that the same vans serve, along with most of Dumfries and Galloway further out, throughout the DG postcode area.

Near a border, or anywhere tricky to explain? Asking beats assuming, and so ring.

No moving is needed. In Annan, a coastal town, a mobile service fits: the vehicle is emptied on the spot, be it on a driveway, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Annan: the cost of fixing it

Every job is different, and so no fixed price is fair.

The cost shifts first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that went in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight space behind St. Andrew's Parish Church of Scotland.

Ahead of any quote, not afterwards, each call from Annan opens with three checks: the fuel, the quantity, plus if the engine ran.

Once they are answered, a range turns into a single firm number.

You hear that price by phone, before anyone heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is travelling, check your policy: many include misfuelling.

## In Annan and still next to the car?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Ignition off, engine off, keys out.

Tell us it was AdBlue, about what quantity, and if it ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel handles it, across Annan or anywhere within Dumfries and Galloway.
