# AdBlue in the Diesel Tank in Ansdell? Keep It Switched Off

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave the engine off then leave the ignition off.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

The harm begins once it's pulled through the lines — it won't burn, and it won't combine with diesel.

Caught before the motor has run, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Ansdell.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## Your next steps right now, Ansdell: AdBlue in your diesel tank

Do:

- Remove the keys, which stops someone switching the power on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- Keep your receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and about how much.

- Call right where you are. Quote a FY8 4 postcode or the closest street name, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Things not to do:

- No starting the engine — not briefly, not to reposition your vehicle.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Do not drive the car anywhere, not even a short way up Albany Road.

- Don't try to drain the vehicle yourself at the kerbside.

On a forecourt around Ansdell, whether it is the Shell or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

Stopped on your own drive? Then it stays exactly where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not the motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in it is supposed to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is made to handle it.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves really differently from fuel. It doesn't mix in.

The intake takes fuel from the deepest part of your tank, and that's precisely where AdBlue settles: as it is heavier than diesel, it sinks.

Simplest of all: a vehicle that got AdBlue in Higher Ballam last night and has not been started since. The AdBlue sits at the base of your tank, untouched — though it will be the first thing through once the engine starts, before any diesel at all.

After it is pulled in, the damage takes two forms.

What remains once the water goes is urea, which turns into crystals: they settle in narrow passages and clog filters. On top of that, it attacks some metals in a fuel system, and keeps going until it's flushed out.

Lines carrying AdBlue mean damage overnight for a vehicle sitting around Ansdell. Just inside your tank, it stays the same.

Diesel protects the injection pump and each injector as it flows; water gives no lubrication, which is a second form of damage.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Texaco's forecourt makes your fuel thin — that's the whole fault.

Harm only comes from driving on it. Mixed into the diesel and left inside the tank, it causes none.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is simply the wrong one.

It cannot just be run through, since it does not burn.

It does not stay mixed, so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether the vehicle is in Lytham St Annes or the middle of Ansdell.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Wherever across Lancashire the car has stopped, an unrun motor leaves the AdBlue still in the tank: the easiest bit of a fuel system to clear.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Ansdell?

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, now and then behind a single flap — can appear the same. No one means it; plenty of designs allow it.

A container bought while heading home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the typical story.

Mostly, it takes place in one of a couple of familiar ways.

Rushing, outside Ansdell Primary School, after a warning light flashed on during the school run, someone refills the car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Rufford Court.

Or a driver unfamiliar with that flap refills your car in dim light, parked in the car park outside The Blossoms.

Rented cars, brand-new vehicles, fleet motors, or the spare car in a family with one of each: the least known cars get it the most.

Same mistake, same first step — keep it switched off — wherever you are in Ansdell or the rest of Lancashire.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank around Ansdell, and the engine started?

Then the tank is no longer where the AdBlue is.

Via the fuel filter, along the pipework, and — given any running time — into the high-pressure pump and each injector: that's where it has gone.

Lumpy running, smoke, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each might show up, perhaps part way across Ansdell or returning from Lansdowne Road Park.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

More of that is pulled through with each start.

Ansdell lies under 5 miles from the M55; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and pull up somewhere safe instead of driving on.

How far it went counts. A few hundred yards across Ansdell to the car park by St Joseph's is a very different job from a run towards Preston, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the rinsing where your car has come to a stop, and once the motor has run there is more of it.

Long-term damage is very rare when it's spotted soon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Ansdell?

A street beside Ansdell Library, a drive, a layby or a forecourt: wherever the car has come to rest around Ansdell, we travel to it.

Before anything else we ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your motor has been run, because those replies determine this work.

Next, emptying your tank on the spot takes out the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

The fuel system is cleaned thoroughly, which matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, because what it leaves behind doesn't rinse out on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Roughly half an hour on site is typical for most jobs when your engine has not run.

The equipment is explosion-proof, so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it is quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

Bleeding your system with clean diesel comes at the end.

You drive off as soon as our technicians have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway around Ansdell or in a bay at Ansdell & Fairhaven.

Before leaving, our technicians make sure it's running smoothly with new diesel in.

As the job is done in full where the car is, a workshop never comes into it.

The insurer is likely to want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours afterwards.

Near a boundary, or somewhere tricky to pin down? Asking beats guessing, so phone.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right in Ansdell

No flat price could be fair, since every job differs.

Three things move the price: whether the engine has been running and for how long, how much AdBlue was put in, and where the vehicle is. That last one turns on whether a technician can reach it safely, and an open drive is simpler than a tight spot behind St Paul.

That's why each call from Ansdell starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what went in, how much, and if it has run.

Those replies shrink the range down to one number.

The price is quoted on the call, before a van sets off; payment happens on the day, by card or by phone, and nothing upfront.

As our engineer is travelling, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Ansdell: still beside the vehicle?
