# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Aqueduct? Don't Start It

If AdBlue has gone into your diesel tank, leave your engine off and leave your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It doesn't burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when the fuel system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Aqueduct, is generally what AdBlue in a diesel tank needs — if it's caught before your engine has run.

No step comes before calling 0333 366 0103.

## What to do right now, Aqueduct: AdBlue in your diesel tank

To do:

- Keys out — then nobody can power anything on.

- Close to moving traffic? Then put your hazards on.

- Which fluid, and roughly what amount? Save the bottle or your receipt, and our engineers will know.

- Ring just where you are. Quote a TF4 3 postcode or the nearest street sign, and nobody has to hunt for you.

Do not:

- Not even for a second, and not to roll the car: the motor stays off.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Don't top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue doesn't mix in diesel; it separates out.

- Keep the car where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch down Shutfield Road.

- Emptying the tank yourself by the road isn't worth trying.

On a forecourt in Aqueduct, whether it's the Esso or another one, ask the attendants to help you push the vehicle away from the petrol pump.

Parked on your own drive? Then it stays exactly as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for the exhaust, not your motor.

Its own reservoir holds it, and from there it's sprayed into the exhaust, where it cleans the fumes.

A fuel pump is not made to take it, and AdBlue was never supposed to go through one.

Tipped in with the diesel, it stays separate rather than blending — entirely unlike fuel.

It is heavier than diesel, so it sinks and collects at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

When the system runs, the AdBlue is first to be pulled through. Before then it sits beneath your diesel, which is how a vehicle topped up in Tweedale yesterday and not switched on stays the straightforward case, as long as no one touches the key.

After it is drawn in, the harm comes in two forms.

It eats at certain metals found in fuel systems, attacking whatever it touches until it is removed completely. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in narrow channels.

Overnight, a vehicle parked in Aqueduct with AdBlue in its lines grows worse; where it's just inside that tank, nothing changes.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel running past them, so the water content damages them by itself.

## AdBlue in a diesel: why it's often worse than petrol

Put petrol in a diesel at the Shell and you have a fault of thin fuel.

Damage only comes from driving on it. Blended into your diesel and sitting in your tank, it does nothing.

AdBlue in a diesel is a fault of the wrong substance altogether.

It does not burn, so it can't simply be run through.

Whether your car is in Madeley or the centre of Aqueduct, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other mistake, and the flush matters for more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, so diluting it fails; and crystals and corrosion survive the following fill.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

If your engine has not run, the AdBlue is still in your tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever around Shropshire your car is sitting.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Aqueduct?

In dim light, two caps together — the AdBlue one and the diesel cap, now and then behind one flap — may appear the same. No one means it; plenty of designs invite it.

It usually takes place outside the house, from a bottle bought en route home, not at the forecourt.

Mostly, it occurs in one of a couple of familiar ways.

The refill gets hurried outside Aqueduct Primary Academy, because your dash lit up with a warning while the kids were taken in.

In the evening, a bottle is tipped in on a drive near Eleanors Close.

Or a driver new to that flap tops up your vehicle in dim light, stopped in the car park outside The Britannia.

Rented motors, brand-new motors, fleet vehicles, or the spare vehicle in a family with one of each: the least familiar cars see it the most.

An identical mistake, same first step — keep it switched off — anywhere you are around Aqueduct or the rest of Shropshire.

## Started the engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank in Aqueduct?

If so, the AdBlue is no longer inside that tank.

It's been pulled through the filter and your lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure pump and the injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, lost power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: any may appear, maybe part way across Aqueduct or returning from Little Dawley Park.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to check.

Each start pulls more of that through.

Aqueduct lies under 3 miles from the M54; if you were on it, exit at the first junction and pull up safely rather than carrying on.

Hopping across Aqueduct to the car park by War Memorial is one matter; driving towards Wolverhampton, under 15 miles away, is something else, because every mile carries the AdBlue further in. So mileage counts.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

Wherever the car came to a stop is where all of it gets done, even with more to flush once the engine has been run.

Spotted early, it very rarely leaves long-term damage.

## What emptying AdBlue from a diesel involves in Aqueduct

Anywhere it has come to rest around Aqueduct — a filling station, a lay-by, a drive, a road by Holy Trinity Church — our van comes to your vehicle.

The work depends on three replies, and our technicians get first — what was put in, the quantity, and if your motor has turned over.

On the spot, your tank is then drained, and all of the polluted diesel and the urea come out as one.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, flushing counts: the fuel system is flushed right through because what remains won't flush out by itself.

After that, the filter: flushed, or replaced if it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a check of the car.

If the motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we arrive.

Low-noise enough to use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, our pumps are explosion-proof.

The final step is to prime the system on fresh diesel.

You set off as soon as our technicians have started the engine, and it makes no difference whether the vehicle is on a driveway in Aqueduct or in a space by Telford Central.

Our engineers check it runs correctly on clean diesel before leaving.

The entire job is done where the vehicle is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and you get both afterwards.

## About Aqueduct itself

Aqueduct is a suburban area in Shropshire, situated inland at an elevation of 131 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Aqueduct lies approximately 14.5 miles from Wolverhampton and 126.5 miles from London, placing it in the wider West Midlands region. Aqueduct is surrounded by other nearby places, including Little Dawley, Lightmoor, and Woodside, and has a population of around 3825 residents. Aqueduct forms a distinct residential community within the local area.

## AdBlue drains across Aqueduct and Shropshire

Little Dawley, Lightmoor and Woodside are among the places near Aqueduct that the same vans reach, together with much of Shropshire beyond, over the TF postcode area.

Ring and check rather than guess when you are close to a border, or anywhere tricky to explain.

A mobile service suits Aqueduct, a residential suburb: there's no need to take the vehicle to us, because our technicians empty it on the spot, in a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a filling station.

## What does AdBlue in a diesel tank cost to sort out around Aqueduct?

There is no fair single quote, because the jobs aren't the same.

Whether your engine has been running, and for how long, comes first in what shifts the cost. How much AdBlue went in comes next, and then the position of the vehicle, since an open driveway is easier for our van to reach safely than a tight spot behind Telford Ski Centre.

Ahead of any figure, never afterwards, each call from Aqueduct begins with the same three questions: the fuel, the amount, plus if it ran.

The replies turn a range into a straight price.

You hear that price by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

While our engineer is on the way, check your insurance: plenty cover misfuelling.

## Aqueduct: still next to the vehicle?

Then, do nothing — that's the most helpful move available.

Keys out; engine and ignition off.

Ring 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and whether it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Aqueduct or anywhere around Shropshire.
