# Arnside: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off then call 0333 366 0103.

Around Arnside, catching it before the engine runs normally means a drain and a full flush where it stands.

The remainder of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — useful if you are reading ahead of time.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Diesel goes to the motor — but plenty of current diesels driven around Arnside and Storth hold another fluid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler is beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in on each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, usually from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

It's in that gap that the mistake happens.

## Arnside: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Seldom is it carelessness: usually three things line up.

On a drive off The Promenade before work, or in the car park outside The Albion on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low the car tells you, and once it's gone, limp mode kicks in.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one didn't, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in as easily, and after the pour begins, nothing halts it.

Carr Bank or the heart of Arnside: it is the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Arnside or a driveway over in Meathop. A few seconds, that's all.

- Position can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue caps tend to be blue or bear the word "AdBlue" — diesel caps usually don't.

- Plenty of vehicles give AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- The handbook says which it lives when the filler is not next to the diesel cap: the boot, or under the bonnet.

- Whoever had it before knows. Ask when you collect a rental or company car — from the nearest station's car park, perhaps — not once the warning appears.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere in Cumbria, use this routine.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Silverdale Road.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Tip slowly, using the bottle's own spout. Stop when it's full or when the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the car, close the cap and look again that your diesel cap never came off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## Arnside: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

The fuel pump runs on many diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — so keep it off.

Topping up with diesel won't weaken it: instead, AdBlue sinks to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.

On a forecourt — BP, Shell or any other — the attendants will usually help roll the car clear, if you ask.

On your own drive around Arnside? Then the vehicle stays where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the motor has already run.

The next junction means the place to come off if you are on the M6, under 5 miles from Arnside.

Tell us about how far it went: a run towards Lancaster, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Arnside.

## When we get there in Arnside, what occurs?

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Arnside National CofE School, close to Arnside Library or on your own driveway.

Our engineers ask what went in, about how much, and if it's run, because those replies settle the work and the quote.

During the phone call itself, you hear our price — before dispatch.

The fuel system is then flushed thoroughly, after that tank is drained.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of that washes away unaided, however long it sits.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

Before we go, our technicians fire it up and check that it's running correctly.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

It is worth looking at your policy as the van travels to you: misfuelling cover comes with many policies.

## AdBlue drains around Arnside and across Cumbria

Hazelslack and Far Arnside are among the places near Arnside, a coastal village, that the same teams cover, over LA postcodes.

Fastest of all: give a LA5 0 postcode to the van.

Your car stays where it is.

A drive, a lay-by on the way to Memorial Playing Fields, a side street near Arnside Education Institute: we drain the vehicle where it stands.

Assuming won't help behind Gallery H, close to a boundary, or anywhere hard to describe; phone and ask.

## Arnside motorists: the short version

Read the cap before you pour.

Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, anywhere across Cumbria, if AdBlue has gone in your diesel tank anyway — so leave the car off and call 0333 366 0103.
