# Ashbourne: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your engine and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before your engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Ashbourne.

The rest of this page explains why it happens and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels in Spitalhill, as well as Ashbourne, run on two fluids; your motor gets only the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there spraying cleans the fumes.

There is a filler for each tank.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have both side by side behind one flap.

Topping up the diesel side at the petrol pump happens constantly.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the error lives.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank happens around Ashbourne

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and running dry means limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, maybe before work off St John Street, perhaps outside The Queen's Vaults on the way home after work.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Ashbourne or out in Bellevue.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Ashbourne forecourt or a drive out in Nether Sturston, spend a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- Colour and lettering: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally doesn't. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Look at the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- Look inside the fuel flap: plenty of vehicles have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- Can't see it beside the diesel filler? In that case look beneath the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook says where.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park at Uttoxeter, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the light comes on — wherever it is across Derbyshire — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Buxton Road, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off properly.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've found the filler and read it.

- The diesel cap remains on. Where the two sit under a flap, confirm it's shut before lifting the bottle.

- Finish when the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently through its built-in spout.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check once more, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Ashbourne: already put AdBlue in the diesel tank?

Don't start the engine: that's how the short order of things begins.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

At a forecourt — Lumbards Service Centre, Prestons or another — the attendants will usually help roll your car away, if you ask.

Your own driveway around Ashbourne is where it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if your motor has already run.

Ashbourne sits under 25 miles from the M1; there, use the first junction.

Mileage counts — a quick hop across Ashbourne makes a smaller job than driving under 15 miles to Derby — so tell us about how far it went.

## Ashbourne: what happens when we get there

The van comes to the vehicle anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near Tom Fearn memorial, or outside Ashbourne Primary School.

Those replies settle the work and our price, so our technicians ask what got in, about how much, and whether it's run.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.

The system is then cleaned thoroughly, once that tank is drained.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it does not wash out on its own.

A test comes last: before that, fresh diesel is added, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

Before we leave, we start the engine and check that it's running correctly.

Unstarted vehicles mostly need a half-hour visit after the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy filling station, and hushed enough for a driveway late at night.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## Ashbourne and Derbyshire: AdBlue drains across the area

Ashbourne is a riverside town, and our teams that cover it also work the places around it, Compton and The Leys among them, across the DE postcode area.

Give a postcode beginning DE6 1, and our van arrives fastest.

The vehicle doesn't need to move.

Wherever it sits — near Francis Wright, in a lay-by en route to Brickyard Park, at home — that's where it is emptied.

Tricky to explain, like the back of Ashbourne Library? By a county line? Checking is better than assuming, so phone.

## In short, for Ashbourne drivers

Before you pour, read the cap.

If AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless, leave the car off and phone 0333 366 0103. Petrol in Diesel clears it where it sits, anywhere across Derbyshire.
