# Ashby: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

With AdBlue in your diesel tank, your ignition stays off and so does your motor.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

It does not burn, it doesn't mix with diesel, and the damage it does starts when your fuel system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Ashby, is normally what AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it is caught before your motor has run.

Before you do anything else, phone 0333 366 0103.

## Those opening minutes: AdBlue in your diesel tank around Ashby

To do:

- Keys out — then nobody can switch anything on.

- Put the hazard lights on if you are at all close to moving traffic.

- Hold on to the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what was put in and roughly how much.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting DN16 3, or the name of the nearest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Do not:

- No starting the engine — not briefly, not to reposition the vehicle.

- Don't switch your ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to thin it. AdBlue doesn't dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Leave the vehicle where it is rather than driving it anywhere, even a short stretch up Lancaster Road.

- Draining the tank on your own by the road is not one to try.

On a forecourt around Ashby, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or another one, ask the staff to help you push the vehicle clear of the petrol pump.

If you're on your own drive, leave the car just where it stands.

## What AdBlue does in a diesel tank

Meant for the exhaust, AdBlue has no business in the motor.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it is sprayed into your exhaust, and there it treats the gas.

No part in a fuel pump is made for this fluid — and none of it was intended to go through one.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, once tipped in, won't. Its behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

It's heavier than diesel, so it sinks and gathers at the bottom of the tank, which is where the pickup sucks fuel from.

The first thing the fuel system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a vehicle that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in New Brumby last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

After it's sucked in, the harm comes in two forms.

It eats at some metals used in fuel components, working on any part it touches till it is removed from your system. And when the water goes, the urea turns into crystals that clog filters and lodge in tiny channels.

Where the AdBlue is in the lines, waiting overnight in Ashby leaves it worse. In that tank only, time costs nothing.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and each injector need diesel flowing through them, so the water part harms them by itself.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is regularly worse

Top up a diesel with petrol by mistake at the JET, and the issue is diluted fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and whilst it is inside the tank it causes no damage; the damage comes from running the engine on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is another problem: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

Not burning, it cannot simply be run through.

It does not stay mixed, and so it cannot be weakened. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting your motor "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether your car is in Old Brumby or the middle of Ashby.

With AdBlue, the good news is no distinct from petrol.

Never started? Then the AdBlue waits only inside the tank, the easiest bit of the whole system to clear, wherever the car has come to rest across Lincolnshire.

## Ashby: how AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on many motors waits right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

Usually it's not the filling station: a driver picks up a container driving home and tips it in outside the house.

A few familiar ways cover most cases.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside Oakfield Primary School.

Close to Bottesford Road, someone tips a container in on the drive after work.

Or the car is topped up in the car park outside RAOB Club, in poor light, by a person who has never opened that flap before.

The least known vehicles get it the most — rentals, brand-new cars, fleet cars, and the other motor in a home with both fuel types.

Wherever you're in Ashby or the rest of Lincolnshire, it is the same slip and the same first answer: leave the car off.

## Started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Ashby?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in your tank.

It's been sucked through your filter and the fuel lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has got to the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

Rough running, smoke from the exhaust, dropping power, dashboard lights or stalling: each might appear, maybe part way across Ashby or coming back from Spider Park.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

Every start pulls more of it through.

If you were on the M180, under 3 miles from Ashby, come off at the next exit and stop somewhere safe instead of pressing on.

Each mile pushes the AdBlue deeper in. That's why crossing Ashby to park beside St Paul's Church and a drive of under 25 miles towards Kingston upon Hull are such different jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our technicians do all of the flushing where your car has stopped, and once the engine has run there is more of it.

Noticed quickly, it very rarely leaves lasting damage.

## Draining AdBlue in a diesel in Ashby: what it takes

Our engineers come to the vehicle, wherever it has stopped around Ashby: a side street near Ashby War Memorial, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Three answers shape the job, and so before anything else we ask which fluid was put in, roughly what quantity, plus whether your engine has run.

The contaminated diesel and the urea come out as one after your tank is emptied, right there.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, and so the whole system gets a careful flush, which matters far more with urea than for petrol.

After that, the fuel filter: cleaned, or changed if it must be. After that clean diesel, and then a test of the vehicle.

If your engine has not run, most jobs take about half an hour once our engineers arrive.

Low-noise enough for use outside a house at night, and fine on a working forecourt, the pumps are explosion-proof.

Fresh diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the last step.

Whether it's a parking space by Scunthorpe or a drive in Ashby, that is where our technicians fire it up and you set off.

It is checked on new diesel to be sure it runs properly before our technicians leave.

Because the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

The insurer will want an engineer's report and your VAT invoice — each handed over afterwards.

Lincoln Gardens, Brumby and Bottesford are among the places around Ashby that the same teams reach, along with most of Lincolnshire further out, throughout the DN postcode area.

Close to a boundary, or somewhere tricky to explain? Checking is better than assuming, and so ring.

A van that comes to you fits Ashby, a residential suburb: you have no need to bring the car to us, because our engineers drain it on the spot, in a drive, a residential street, a car park or a filling station.

## Ashby: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

No single figure could be fair, because each job is different.

What moves the cost is, first of all, whether the motor has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where the car is and whether a van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight spot behind Salvation Army Worship and Community Centre.

That's why every call from Ashby starts with the same three questions, asked before giving a figure, not after: what was put in, how much, and if it has run.

Given them, the range narrows to a single fixed figure.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out, and you pay on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Check your policy whilst we are on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## Next to your car in Ashby, still?

Not touching the car is, then, the best move open to you.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Petrol in Diesel handles the remainder, in Ashby or anywhere in Lincolnshire, once you call 0333 366 0103 to say it was AdBlue, about how big an amount, and if the engine ran.
