# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ashfield: Why It Happens and How to Prevent It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? In that case set this page aside for now, leave the ignition and motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the engine runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Ashfield.

The rest of this page covers why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of modern diesels around Tudorville, like those in Ashfield, run on two liquids; the motor gets just the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on many vehicles. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt visit, again and again.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side gets filled — mostly from a bottle, by someone thinking about where it goes.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How does AdBlue in your diesel tank occur around Ashfield?

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the car, and running out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Archenfield Road, perhaps outside Prince of Wales on the way home that evening.

Then your car is new. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Lastly, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and after the pour begins, no part stops it.

Whether it occurs in Ross-on-Wye or the middle of Ashfield, it is the same few seconds.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt in Ashfield or a driveway out in Wilton. A few seconds, that's all.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is frequently blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- On many vehicles, size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by the diesel cap, it's in your boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you collect a rental or fleet car — at Ledbury's car park, perhaps — rather than when the light comes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

Wherever in Herefordshire the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Kent Avenue, not on a slope, not with your motor running: park then switch off first.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, yes, yet it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? Then stop just there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Ashfield?

What follows is a short order of things, beginning with not starting your motor.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Morrisons, the BP or anywhere else.

If you are on your own drive in Ashfield, leave the car where it stands.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

Ashfield sits under 3 miles from the M50; there, use the first exit.

A short hop across Ashfield is a smaller job than a run towards Hereford, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Ashfield: what occurs when we get there

Outside St Joseph's RC Primary School and Nursery, near Ross on Wye Bowls and Petanque Club or on your own driveway: wherever the car has stopped, our engineers come to it.

Which fluid was put in, the quantity, and if it ran: we ask since the answers set both work and quote.

The price comes over the phone, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of your system.

Much more than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes away unaided, no matter how long it sits.

After the filter is flushed — or renewed, where needed — fresh diesel is added, and then the vehicle gets tested.

Before we go, our technicians fire it up and confirm that it is running correctly.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our technicians get there, as long as your motor has not run — and the pumps our technicians use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains about Ashfield, and Herefordshire beyond

Being a residential suburb, Ashfield has the same vans as surrounding areas — Archenfield, Merrivale — right across HR postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Fastest of all: give a HR9 5 postcode to the van.

There's no need to move the car.

Wherever it stands — near St Mary the Virgin, on a lay-by en route to The Prospect, at home — that's where it is cleared.

Awkward to pin down, like the back of Falklands War? Close to a county line? Asking beats guessing, so ring.

## In short, for Ashfield motorists

First, the cap; after that, the pour.

AdBlue in your diesel tank regardless? Leave the car off and ring 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it where it stands, throughout Herefordshire.
