# Ashford Common: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Keep the motor and ignition off then call 0333 366 0103 now — the rest can wait if AdBlue is already in your diesel tank.

Usually, if the motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and thoroughly flushed where your car is around Ashford Common.

Not happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the why it occurs and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Not one fluid but two: that is how plenty of newer diesels around Ashford Common and Sunbury-on-Thames run, with diesel feeding your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, next to each other: that's the layout on a lot of vehicles. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits beneath the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in on every filling station visit, again and again.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

It is in the gap that the mistake happens.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Ashford Common: how it happens

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and letting it run dry leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Feltham Hill Road, perhaps outside The Running Horse on the way home that evening.

New-to-you cars are next, as well. Hire cars, new cars and company cars put their fillers in new places, and habit reaches for the cap used on the old one.

No part stops the pour once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Littleton Common or the middle of Ashford Common: it takes the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Be it a Ashford Common forecourt or a drive out in Lower Feltham, take a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Colour and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap usually does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Look at the size: the smaller neck is, on many vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many motors say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside your diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook says where.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Upper Halliford? Check with whoever drove the vehicle last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

On the day the light appears — wherever you are across Surrey — a simple routine to use.

- Turn off after you park — flat ground, engine stopped, and not in a rush by Alexandra Road on the verge.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle runs out.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and look a second time that the diesel cap never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Never go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Ashford Common?

Short order, then. First: the engine remains unstarted.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition goes on — and so keep it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where your fuel is pulled from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump if you're at a forecourt — the Esso, the BP or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway in Ashford Common.

If your engine has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

Leave the M3 — under a mile out of Ashford Common — at the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Westminster, under 15 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Ashford Common.

## Our arrival around Ashford Common, and what happens next

Our van reaches your car wherever it stopped — your own driveway, beside Sunbury Youth Centre, or outside Meadhurst Primary School.

Both the work and the price depend on three replies — what liquid, what amount, and whether it has run — so we ask.

During the call itself, you hear the price — ahead of dispatch.

Next: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and eats at some fuel-system metals, and neither washes away unaided. Hence it counts more.

Once your filter is cleaned — or replaced, if needed — clean diesel goes in, and finally the car is tested.

We do not go until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough for use outside a house at night, most jobs in which the motor has not run take roughly half an hour after we are there.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours once this job is done. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.

Fastest of all: give a TW15 1 postcode for our van.

Moving your car isn't necessary.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Sunbury Library, a lay-by on the way to Spelthorne Sports Club, a drive.

If you are close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain like the back of St Saviour, ring and ask instead of assuming.
