# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ashtons Green: Why It Occurs and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Around Ashtons Green, finding it before your engine turns normally means draining and a thorough flush on the spot.

If you're reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it occurs and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor, and its separate tank

Plenty of newer diesels in Moss Nook, like those in Ashtons Green, carry on two fluids; your motor takes only the diesel.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, where a spray treats the fumes.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Filling the diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by a person who has to stop and think where it goes.

It is in the gap that the error lives.

## Ashtons Green: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Horseshoe Close before work, or in the car park outside The Horseshoe on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up takes place. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue gets low the vehicle warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

The old car's cap is where the hand reaches — yet a rental car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers somewhere else. That is the second thing: an unfamiliar vehicle.

Nothing stops the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

Derbyshire Hill or the heart of Ashtons Green: it is the same few seconds in both.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you tip anything, whether on a driveway in Parr Stocks or a forecourt around Ashtons Green, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is often blue, or marked "AdBlue". The diesel cap normally isn't. Read it instead of going by where it sits.

- On plenty of motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- A label inside your fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on plenty of motors. Look for it.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler sits if it is not by your diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park outside St Helens Junction? Ask whoever drove the car last before you set off, rather than when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach the diesel tank

When the light goes on, anywhere around Merseyside, follow this routine.

- Turn off after you park — level ground, motor stopped, and never in a rush beside Derbyshire Hill Road on the verge.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — once you've found the filler and read the cap.

- The diesel cap stays on. Where both share a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start your car, close the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

Find at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop just there.

Leave out step five entirely.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Ashtons Green?

Don't start your engine: that's how the short order of things starts.

On many diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, and so don't switch the vehicle on.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of that tank, where your fuel is sucked from — so do not top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the Horseshoe Garage or the BP, ask the attendants to help push the car away from the petrol pump.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own driveway around Ashtons Green.

When your motor has been run already, pull over somewhere safe then switch the car off.

## What occurs when our engineers turn up around Ashtons Green

Our van comes to the car anywhere it has come to rest — your own driveway, near The Parr Sports & Community Centre, or by Broad Oak Community Primary School.

Both the work and our price rest on three answers — which liquid, which amount, and if it's run — so our engineers ask.

You get that quote by phone, before anybody heads out.

Your system is then flushed thoroughly, once the tank is emptied.

More than with petrol, it matters here: crystals form, some metals are attacked, and none of that clears out unaided, no matter how long it is left.

The filter cleaned or, if needed, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

After that our technicians start the car and check it runs correctly before we go.

Using pumps safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your motor has not run need about half an hour once we are there.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

Plenty of insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
