# Aspley: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Leave your motor and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 first — reading can wait when AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Caught before the engine runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Aspley.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the page covers the why it occurs and the ways to prevent it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Many modern diesels in Broxtowe, as well as Aspley, carry on two fluids; your engine takes just the diesel.

Its own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the gas.

There's a filler for each tank.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others place the two side by side behind one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes usually tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

The mistake lives in that gap.

## Aspley: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

Carelessness seldom causes it. Instead is three things lining up at once.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and running dry means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, maybe before work off Aspley Park Drive, or outside The Beacon on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — yet a hire car, a new motor or a company car keeps the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: an unfamiliar car.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after started, carries on.

Whether it takes place in Beechdale or the middle of Aspley, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a driveway in Cinderhill or a forecourt in Aspley.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are commonly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps usually are not.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on plenty of cars. Check for it.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at Bulwell.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Nottinghamshire that is.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of Dalemoor Gardens.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you've located your filler and read the cap.

- Both under one flap? Then make sure the lid on your diesel side is still closed before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check once more. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the vehicle.

If at stage two or three you find you have already poured into the diesel side, stop there.

Don't go on to step five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Aspley already?

Then the order of things is short. Don't start the engine.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Filling up with diesel will not dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, just where fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Texaco, Esso or another — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle clear, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Aspley.

Where the motor has run already, stop safely then turn it off.

Aspley lies under 3 miles from the M1; on it, use the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Hopping across Aspley is smaller work than a run of under 3 miles towards Nottingham, and so say.

## Aspley: what happens when our engineers arrive

Our van comes to your car anywhere it has come to rest — your own drive, beside Aspley Pentecostal Church, or outside Ambleside Primary School.

Our technicians ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether it has run, because the replies determine the work and the quote.

The quote is given on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Draining your tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own.

Filter flushed or, if it must be, swapped; fresh diesel in; then a check of the vehicle.

Before we leave, our engineers fire it up and make sure that it's running correctly.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after we get there, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps our technicians use are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet after dark beside a house.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Wrong-fuel cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so use the wait to look at yours.

## About Aspley itself

Aspley is a suburban area located near the city of Nottingham in the East Midlands region of England. Aspley sits at an elevation of 55 metres, approximately 2.2 miles west of Nottingham's city centre. Aspley is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock and is situated near other local areas such as Beechdale and Bobbers Mill. Aspley has a population of around 6420 residents.

## AdBlue drains around Aspley and across Nottinghamshire

Being a residential suburb, Aspley has the same vans as surrounding places — Bobbers Mill, Whitemoor — all the way through NG postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

A postcode starting NG8 3 gets the van to you fastest.

The car remains where it is.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to Salvation Army, a lay-by on the way to Robins Wood, a drive.

Tricky to pin down, like the back of St. Margaret's? By a county line? Asking is better than assuming, so phone.

## In short, for Aspley people

Before you pour, read the cap.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Keep the vehicle switched off and phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel empties it on the spot, throughout Nottinghamshire.
