# Astley Village: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page aside a moment, keep the ignition and motor off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

In Astley Village, finding it before the motor runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

Here in advance? In that case what follows covers how it happens and what to prevent it ever happening.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads round Astley Village and Little Knowley carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Each tank has its own filler.

Some motors put the AdBlue filler in your boot or under the bonnet; plenty of others have both side by side under one flap.

The diesel side is filled at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## How does AdBlue in the diesel tank occur in Astley Village?

Three things tend to come together, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

Hurry comes from the warning. The car warns you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank puts the vehicle into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a drive off Chancery Road, or on the way home in the car park outside The Astley.

New-to-you vehicles come second, too. Rentals, new vehicles and company cars place their fillers in new places, and habit goes for the cap it used on the old one.

Third, the bottle goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in just as readily, and after the pour begins, no part stops it.

Whether it happens in Chorley or the middle of Astley Village, it is the same few seconds.

## The AdBlue filler and the diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these before pouring, on a forecourt around Astley Village or a driveway over in Bolton Green. A few seconds, that's all.

- Where it sits misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or bear the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally do not.

- On many cars, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- Open the filler flap and check for a label — many motors show which goes in each filler just there.

- Cannot find it beside your diesel filler? Then check beneath the bonnet or in your boot — the owner's manual says which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, perhaps at the car park at Chorley? Ask whoever drove the car last before leaving, rather than once the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Lancashire that is.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with your motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Hallgate.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Find at the second or third stage that AdBlue went in the wrong tank? That's where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Astley Village?

Short order, then. Top of it: the motor stays unstarted.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to dilute it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

If you're on a forecourt, whether it is the Shell or the Tesco, ask the attendants to help roll the car clear of the pump.

On your own drive in Astley Village? So your car remains where it is.

When the engine has been run already, stop somewhere safe and turn the vehicle off.

The next junction is the place to come off when you're on the M61, under a mile from Astley Village.

Distance counts — a short hop across Astley Village is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards Preston — so say about how far it went.

## Our arrival in Astley Village, and what happens next

Our technicians come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Buckshaw Primary School, close to Astley Village Community Centre or on your own drive.

We ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it's run, because the replies settle this work and the quote.

The price is given on the call, before any van leaves.

The fuel system is then rinsed thoroughly, after the tank is cleared.

More than with petrol, it matters with AdBlue: crystals build up, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes out on its own, however long it sits.

Testing comes at the end: before that, clean diesel is added, and your filter is flushed or changed if necessary.

The engine is started next and checked to confirm it runs smoothly, all before we leave.

With pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs where the motor hasn't run take about half an hour after our engineers are there.

No money in advance; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Wrong-fuel cover is included in plenty of insurance policies — so make use of the wait to check yours.

Anywhere it stands — near Stable Block to Astley Hall, in a lay-by heading to Damhead Wood, on a drive — that is where it gets cleared.

If you're close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Astley Hall, ring and ask instead of guessing.
