# Preventing AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Avery Hill: Why It Happens

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page aside for now, leave your ignition and engine off, and phone 0333 366 0103.

Normally, if your engine has not run, it is emptied and thoroughly purged where the vehicle sits in Avery Hill.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel motor

Diesel goes to the motor — but plenty of newer diesels driven about Avery Hill and New Eltham hold another fluid too.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for each tank.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt call-out, again and again.

Much less commonly, the AdBlue side is topped up — normally from a bottle, by someone working out where it goes.

Mistakes happen in the gap between the two.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Avery Hill: how it occurs

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from your car, and letting it run out means limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Avery Hill Road, or at The Black Boy on the way home that evening.

Unfamiliar motors come second, too. Rentals, new cars and company vehicles place their fillers in new places, and the hand goes for the cap used on the old one.

Third, the spout goes in: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it goes in just as easily, and once the pour begins, no part stops it.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Falconwood or bang in the heart of Avery Hill.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

Before you pour anything, whether on a drive in Longlands or a forecourt in Avery Hill, check these. They take a couple of seconds.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- Check the size: the smaller neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- Cannot find it beside the diesel filler? In that case look below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook will say where.

- The previous driver knows. Ask when you pick up a rental or company car — from Falconwood's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

For the day the light comes on — anywhere you are around Greater London — a routine to use.

- Pull in on level, motor off, with time to spare — not hurried on the side of Bexley Road.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, once you find the AdBlue filler and read it. Silly, perhaps, yet it works.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, pour slowly — and stop when it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting your car, close the cap and check again that the diesel cap was never opened off.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into the diesel side.

Never carry on to stage five.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, around Avery Hill?

Short list, then. Top of it: your engine stays off.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels the moment the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue sinks to the base of the tank, just where fuel is taken from.

At a forecourt — BP, Shell or another — the staff will normally help push your car clear, if you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Avery Hill.

Where your engine has been run by now, stop somewhere safe then turn the car off.

The next exit is where to leave if you are on the M20, under 10 miles from Avery Hill.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Avery Hill makes a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards London — so tell us about how far it went.

## What happens when our engineers turn up around Avery Hill

By Alderwood Primary School, near Anstridge Community Hall or on your own drive: wherever your car has stopped, we come to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it's run, since those replies settle this work and the quote.

No one sets off until you've had the price over the phone.

Draining your tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the system.

Much more than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and none of it clears out on its own, no matter how long it sits.

The filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

After that our technicians start the engine and confirm it runs correctly before we go.

Unrun vehicles mostly need a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is safe on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a residential street late at night.

Your insurer usually wants the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment comes on the day, with no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it is worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.
