# Bagillt: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

Leave your engine and ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103 now — reading can wait if AdBlue is already in the diesel tank.

Normally, when your motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and thoroughly rinsed where your car is around Bagillt.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel vehicle need its own filler?

No single fluid but two: that is what many newer diesels near Bagillt and New Brighton carry, with diesel feeding the engine.

AdBlue's own tank holds it, and from there it goes to the exhaust, where spraying treats the fumes.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Some vehicles put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more place the two together behind one flap.

Diesel gets filled at every forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Seldom filled, AdBlue normally goes in out of a bottle, poured by a driver who must stop and think what cap it needs.

The slip lives in that gap.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs around Bagillt

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up together.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from your car, and running dry leads to limp mode — so a rushed top-up, perhaps before work off Station Road, or outside The Stag Inn on the way home that evening.

The old car's filler is where the hand reaches — but a hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That is the second factor: a new vehicle.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, carries on.

Whether it occurs in Bryn Merllyn or the middle of Bagillt, it's the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all these take — so run through them before you tip anything, on a driveway in Whelston or a forecourt around Bagillt.

- Position can mislead; the cap doesn't. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones normally don't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of motors, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently says which fuel goes where, on many motors. Check for it.

- Can't find it next to the diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say which.

- Picking up a hire or company car, say at the car park outside Flint? Ask the person who drove the vehicle last before you set off, not when the light comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever around Flintshire that is.

- Not in a rush on the side of Gadlys Lane, not on a slope, not with the motor running: park then switch off first.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- Both behind one flap? Then confirm the lid on the diesel filler is still shut before lifting the bottle.

- Finish when that tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; before that, pour gently using the own spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Spot at stage two or three that it's already gone into the diesel side? So stop right there.

Do not go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Bagillt already?

Don't start your engine: that is how the short order of things begins.

Don't switch the ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Don't top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from.

The staff at the nearest petrol station, Shell or another forecourt will usually help pushing the vehicle away if asked.

At home around Bagillt? Then your car remains where it is.

Stop as soon as it is safe then switch off, if the engine has already run.

Bagillt sits under 10 miles from the M53; on it, use the next junction.

## Bagillt: what takes place when we get there

Wherever the vehicle has stopped, whether by Parkgate Primary School, near Bagillt War Memorial or at home, our van travels to it.

Our technicians ask what went in, roughly how much, and if it has run, because the replies determine this work and the price.

Nobody sets off before you have had the quote by phone.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

With AdBlue that matters more than with petrol: it crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and the car is tested.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running properly.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour visit from the moment we arrive. The equipment is safe on a live filling station, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

The insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and both are yours at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
