# How It Happens and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Balby

Stop reading for a moment if your diesel tank already holds AdBlue in it: ignition off, engine off, then ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Balby.

Nothing happened yet? Below, the page covers the why it takes place and the ways to avoid it altogether.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Diesel feeds your motor — yet plenty of current diesels driven round Balby and Sprotbrough Park hold another liquid as well.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to fresh it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

There is a filler for every tank.

Under one flap, next to each other: that is the arrangement on a lot of motors. Elsewhere, AdBlue's filler sits under the bonnet or in the boot instead.

Diesel goes in at every filling station visit, again and again.

Someone who has to stop and work out where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and far less regularly.

That gap is where the slip lives.

## Balby: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

Rarely is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low your car tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car goes into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a driveway off Woodfield Road before work, or in the car park at The Plough on the way home.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the bottle fits: a diesel filler or AdBlue one, it goes in as readily, and once the pour starts, no part halts it.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Balby or out in Hexthorpe.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Richmond Hill or a forecourt in Balby, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Read the cap instead of going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually aren't.

- Check the size: the smaller filler neck is, on plenty of vehicles, the AdBlue one.

- A label inside the fuel flap frequently shows which fuel goes where, on many vehicles. Look for it.

- The handbook. If your filler is not by your diesel cap, it's in the boot or under the bonnet, and the handbook says which.

- The person who drove the car last. On a hire or company car picked up from somewhere like the car park outside Doncaster, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## Keeping AdBlue out of the diesel tank when you top up

On the day the light comes on — anywhere you are across South Yorkshire — a routine to use.

- Not in a rush on the side of Low Road, not on a slope, not with the engine running: park and switch off properly.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and reading it. Daft, perhaps, yet it works.

- The diesel cap stays on. When both share a flap, confirm it's shut before the bottle comes up.

- Stop once the tank is topped up or the bottle is empty; until then, tip gently through the own spout.

- Close the cap and check a second time. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you have already poured into your diesel side.

Don't go on to stage five.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank already, around Balby?

Don't start your engine: that's where the short order of things starts.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so don't switch it on.

AdBlue doesn't mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where the fuel is pulled from — so do not top up with diesel to dilute it.

At a forecourt — JET, Shell or another — the attendants will normally help push the car away, if you ask.

Your own drive in Balby is where it stays.

Already run? Stop once it is safe, then turn off.

Leave the A1(M) — under a mile out of Balby — at the first exit.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Doncaster, under 3 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Balby.

## When our engineers get there around Balby, what occurs?

Our technicians come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside Woodfield Primary School, near Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church or on your own drive.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since those answers decide the work and our price.

No one heads out until you have heard our price by phone.

Emptying that tank comes next, followed by a full flush of the fuel system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that matters more here than with petrol.

The fuel filter is cleaned, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and the vehicle is tested.

After that our engineers fire it up and check it runs properly before we leave.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour visit from arrival. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and quiet enough for a driveway after dark.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

While we travel, take a look at your policy; many carry cover for misfuelling.

## AdBlue drains about Balby, and South Yorkshire beyond

Being a residential suburb, Balby shares its vans nearby areas — Warmsworth, Newton — right through DN postcodes and the surrounding area beyond.

Give a postcode beginning DN4 8, and the van arrives fastest.

No need to move the vehicle.

Draining takes place right there, be it a driveway, a road by St John the Evangelist, or a layby on the way to Hexthorpe Park.

Assuming won't help at the back of St Peter, close to a border, or somewhere hard to describe; ring and ask.

## Balby drivers: the short version

Pour no AdBlue till you've read the cap.

Still AdBlue in the diesel tank? Petrol in Diesel will drain it wherever it is, anywhere across South Yorkshire: switch the vehicle off then phone 0333 366 0103.
