# Balham: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in the diesel tank? Then set this page down for now, leave the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Usually, if the motor hasn't turned, it's emptied and thoroughly cleaned where the car sits in Balham.

Reading before the event? Then the rest covers why it happens and what to prevent it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Many modern diesels on the roads around Balham and Poynders Parade carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

There's a filler on every tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

The AdBlue side is topped up far less commonly, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The mistake grows in the gap between them.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Balham: how it occurs

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Shipka Road before work, or in the car park outside Hagen & Hyde heading home: that is where the rushed top-up takes place. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low the car warns you, and if it's empty, limp mode follows.

Then your car is strange. A hire car, a new vehicle or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand hits for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. So the tip, after begun, keeps on.

Whether it happens in Clapham Common or the middle of Balham, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Be it a Balham forecourt or a driveway out in Clapham Park, spend a couple of seconds on these before any goes in.

- Read the cap rather than going by where it sits: AdBlue caps are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel caps normally are not.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that's where the filler sits if it's not by your diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The person who drove it last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in the diesel tank

Wherever around Greater London the light comes on, here is a routine for the day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of Bedford Hill.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds silly and it does the trick.

- The two behind a single flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel filler stays closed before raising the bottle.

- Using the bottle's own spout, tip slowly — and stop when it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure your diesel cap was never opened. Only then start the car.

Find at the second or third step that the bottle went into the diesel tank? That's where you stop.

Skip stage five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank around Balham already?

What follows is a short order of things, starting with no starting your engine.

Leave the ignition off too, because on plenty of diesels it by itself runs your pump.

Thinning it with more diesel fails, because AdBlue sinks to the base instead of blending — and that's where your fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — Tesco, Shell or any other — the attendants will normally help push the vehicle away, if you ask.

On your own drive in Balham? So your car stays put.

Already started? Pull over once it is sensible, then switch off.

The next exit is where to come off when you are on the M4, under 10 miles from Balham.

Distance counts — a quick hop across Balham is a smaller job than heading under 5 miles to Westminster — so say about how far it went.

## What occurs when our technicians turn up around Balham

Our engineers come to the vehicle wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside Ravenstone Primary School, close to TK Maxx or on your own driveway.

Which liquid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: our engineers ask because those answers decide both work and price.

No one heads out until you have heard our price by phone.

After that: a drain, then a full flush of the entire system.

Not like petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and neither washes out unaided. That is why it counts more.

A test is at the end: before that, fresh diesel is added, and your filter is cleaned or replaced as needed.

The engine is fired up next and tested to be sure it runs correctly, all before we leave.

Using pumps fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night, most jobs in which your engine hasn't run need roughly half an hour once our engineers are there.

Nothing in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, a VAT invoice and the report from the engineer are handed to you for the insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, and so it's worth checking yours whilst we are on the way.

## AdBlue drains in Balham and across Greater London

Being a residential suburb, Balham shares its vans nearby areas — Upper Tooting, Tooting Bec Common — all the way across SW postcodes and the wider area around them.

Quickest of all: give a SW12 9 postcode to our van.

The car doesn't need to shift.

We drain it where it is — a side street close to a street just off the centre, a lay-by on the way to Nightingale Square, a drive.

Assuming won't help at the back of Balham Library, on a border, or anywhere awkward to pin down; phone and check.
