# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Ballumbie: How It Occurs and How to Stop It

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then put this page down for now, keep your ignition and engine off, then phone 0333 366 0103.

In Ballumbie, finding it before the engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush on the spot.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you're reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel feeds your engine — but plenty of current diesels seen around Ballumbie and Douglas and Angus hold a second liquid as well.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Different tanks, different fillers.

Under one flap, side by side: that is the arrangement on many motors. On others, AdBlue's filler is under the bonnet or in your boot instead.

Topping up your diesel side at the petrol pump goes on all the time.

The AdBlue side is fuelled far less often, normally from a bottle, and normally by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

That gap is where the mistake lives.

## Ballumbie: how AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs

It is hardly ever carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

On a driveway off Ballumbie Rise Gardens before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village heading home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue gets low your car warns you, and if it is gone, limp mode kicks in.

Next, your hand reaches for the cap it knew on the old vehicle — because a rental car, a new car or a company car places the fillers where your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip after it has started.

Whether it occurs in Whitfield or the middle of Ballumbie, it is the same few seconds.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Ballumbie forecourt or a drive over in Middleton, take a couple of seconds over these before any is poured in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally isn't. Read it rather than going by where it sits.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- Lift the filler flap and look for a label — many cars mark which belongs in which inlet just there.

- Can't see it beside the diesel inlet? Then check below the bonnet or in the boot — the handbook says where.

- The previous driver will know. Ask when you pick up a hire car or company car — from Broughty Ferry's car park, perhaps — not once the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

The day the light goes on, anywhere across Dundee City, use this routine.

- Stop somewhere level, motor off, with time to spare — never hurried on the side of Ballumbie Rise Walk.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, check the cap, and speak the word "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft. It does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle runs out.

- Only then, start your car: close the cap, check once more, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at step two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Step five is out.

## Put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Ballumbie already?

Short order, then. Top of it: the engine stays off.

Do not switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't dilute it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, right where the fuel is drawn from.

The staff at Sainsbury's, Asda or another forecourt will normally lend a hand to push the car clear if asked.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own drive in Ballumbie.

Where the motor has run by now, pull over safely and switch the car off.

Leave the M90 — under 25 miles out of Ballumbie — at the next junction.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Ballumbie is a smaller job than driving under 5 miles towards Dundee — so say roughly how far it went.

## When our engineers get there in Ballumbie, what occurs?

Anywhere your car has stopped, be it outside the local primary school, near Ballumbie Castle (remains) or at home, the van comes to it.

What liquid was put in, the amount, and whether it ran: our engineers ask because the replies decide both work and quote.

On the call itself, you are told the quote — before dispatch.

After that: a drain, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why that counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Testing is last: before that, fresh diesel goes in, and your filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

The engine is started next and tested to confirm it runs correctly, all before our engineers head off.

Most jobs are finished in about half an hour after we arrive, provided your motor hasn't run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a busy forecourt yet quiet after dark outside a house.

The insurer will ask for the engineer's report and your VAT invoice, and you get both at the end. Payment is on the day, with no money upfront.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.

## Ballumbie and Dundee City: AdBlue drains across the area

Being a residential suburb, Ballumbie shares its vans surrounding places — Burnside of Duntrune, Baldovie — right across DD postcodes and the wider area around them.

Fastest of all: quote a DD4 0 postcode for our van.

Shifting the car is not needed.

Anywhere it stands — near Whitfield Community Library, in a layby en route to Ballumbie Castle Golf Course, at home — that is where it is drained.

Assuming won't help behind The Crescent Community Centre, close to a boundary, or somewhere awkward to describe; phone and check.

## In short, for Ballumbie motorists

Always, the cap; after that, the pour.

AdBlue in the diesel tank regardless? Leave the vehicle switched off and phone 0333 366 0103; Petrol in Diesel drains it on the spot, across Dundee City.
