# Ballymartin: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, leave the ignition and engine off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

A drain and a full flush, carried out right where your vehicle stands around Ballymartin, is normally all it takes if found before your motor runs.

Reading in advance? In that case what follows covers why it happens and what to stop it happening at all.

## AdBlue in a diesel motor: two tanks, two fillers

Plenty of newer diesels on the roads around Ballymartin and Seaforde carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to your engine.

AdBlue goes to your exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank comes with one filler of its own.

On a lot of cars the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in on every forecourt visit, again and again.

Seldom topped up, AdBlue normally goes in from a bottle, tipped by a driver who must stop and think which filler to use.

Mistakes happen in that gap between the two.

## How AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs in Ballymartin

Carelessness rarely causes it. Instead is three things coming up together.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a message from the vehicle, and running dry leads to limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off B7041, perhaps outside the pub in the village on the way home that evening.

Then the car is strange. A hire car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand gets to for the cap it would have used on the old one.

A spouted bottle finds no resistance at a diesel filler any more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, carries on.

It takes a few seconds, be it out in Ballykinler or right in the centre of Ballymartin.

## Which filler is for AdBlue, and which for diesel?

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Newcastle or a forecourt around Ballymartin.

- Check the cap rather than going by position: AdBlue ones are regularly blue or marked "AdBlue", and diesel ones usually are not.

- Plenty of cars fit AdBlue the smaller filler of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Many vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- In the boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- The previous driver will know. Check as you pick up a rental or fleet car — from the nearest station's car park, say — not when the light appears.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light goes on, wherever in County Down, follow this routine.

- Park and switch off. Not on a slope, not with the motor running, and not in a rush on the side of B7065.

- Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap, after finding the AdBlue filler and read it. Daft, yes, yet it works.

- Both behind a single flap? Then confirm the cap on your diesel filler is still shut before raising the bottle.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Before starting the car, shut the cap and check a second time that your diesel cap was never came off.

Find during the second or third step that AdBlue went into the diesel filler? That is where you stop.

Never go on to stage five.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Ballymartin already?

Short list, then. Top of it: your motor stays off.

Do not switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: instead, AdBlue drops to the base of your tank, right where fuel is taken from.

The attendants at the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or any forecourt will usually help to push the car away if asked.

If you are on your own drive in Ballymartin, leave the vehicle where it is.

Already started? Pull over once it is sensible, then switch off.

On the M77, over 50 miles from Ballymartin, that means the next junction.

Roughly how far did it go? Crossing Ballymartin is smaller work than a trip of under 25 miles towards Lisburn, so say.

## When we get there around Ballymartin, what happens?

Our van comes to the vehicle wherever it stopped — your own drive, near the centre, or outside the local primary school.

Both the work and our price depend on three answers — what fluid, which amount, and whether it's run — so our engineers ask.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.

The system is then flushed thoroughly, once that tank is emptied.

More than with petrol, it counts here: crystals form, certain metals corrode, and nothing clears away on its own, no matter how long it sits.

The filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of the car.

Then our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour after we get there, provided the engine hasn't run — and the pumps we use are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

Nothing upfront; you settle up on the day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Before we get there, take a look at your insurance documents; many include cover for misfuelling.

Quickest of all: give a BT30 8 postcode for our van.

The car doesn't need to shift.

Anywhere it stands — beside a street just off the centre, on a layby heading to the green space at the edge of the village, on a drive — that is where it is drained.

Awkward to explain, like the back of the far end of the built-up part? Close to a border? Asking is better than assuming, and so phone.
