# Ballyrory: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your engine and the ignition off and call 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where the vehicle is in Ballyrory.

If you are reading before it has happened, the rest of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it doesn't.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Plenty of newer diesels around Park, as well as Ballyrory, carry on two fluids; the motor takes just the diesel.

Stored in a tank of its own, AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust stream to clean it.

Each tank comes with one filler of its own.

Some cars put the AdBlue filler in the boot or under the bonnet; plenty more have the two side by side behind one flap.

The diesel side is fuelled at the petrol pump all the time.

A driver who has to stop and think where it goes normally tops up the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less often.

It is in the gap that the slip lives.

## Ballyrory: how AdBlue in your diesel tank happens

Carelessness rarely explains it. What does is three things lining up at once.

Hurry comes from the warning. Your car tells you as AdBlue runs low, and an empty tank sends it into limp mode — so the top-up gets done in a rush, before work on a driveway off Crown Street, or heading home in the car park outside the pub in the village.

The old car's cap is where your hand reaches — but a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car keeps the fillers somewhere else. That is a second factor: a new motor.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

Straidarran or the heart of Ballyrory: it takes the same few seconds either way.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Whether a Ballyrory forecourt or a drive out in Killaloo, spend a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- Blue and marking: an AdBlue cap is often blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not its position.

- Plenty of cars give AdBlue the smaller neck of the two.

- The flap. Look inside the fuel flap for a label. Plenty of cars say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it next to your diesel filler? Then look below the bonnet or inside your boot — the handbook will say which.

- Check with the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — when you pick up a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park outside the nearest station.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

Wherever across County Londonderry the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with your engine running, and not in a rush on the side of Rock Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the name "AdBlue" out loud while unscrewing it. It seems silly. It works.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Close the cap and check again. Make sure the diesel cap was never opened. Only then start your car.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into the diesel side.

Leave out step five altogether.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank around Ballyrory?

Brief list, then. First: your engine stays off.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition goes on — so leave it off.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of the tank, where the fuel is sucked from — so don't top up with diesel to thin it.

If you're at a forecourt, whether it is the the nearest petrol station or the another forecourt nearby, ask the staff to help roll the car away from the pump.

Your own drive in Ballyrory is the place it stays.

If the motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe then switch off.

The next junction means where to come off when you are on the M77, over 50 miles from Ballyrory.

A short hop across Ballyrory is a smaller job than a run towards Derry, under 15 miles away, so tell us roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival in Ballyrory, and what takes place next

Our engineers come to the car wherever it has stopped, whether that's outside the local primary school, close to the centre or on your own driveway.

Those replies determine this work and our quote, and so our engineers ask what got in, about how much, and if it's run.

On the call itself, you are told our price — before anything else.

Your system is then cleaned thoroughly, after the tank is emptied.

More than with petrol, it counts with AdBlue: the crystals form, certain metals are attacked, and none of it washes away unaided, however long it sits.

Filter flushed or, where it must be, replaced; fresh diesel in; and then a test of your car.

We don't leave until it has been fired up and is running smoothly.

If your motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house at night.

Your insurer will ask for an engineer's report and the VAT invoice, and you get both once the job is done. Payment is on the day, with no deposit.

While we travel, take a look at your insurance documents; plenty include cover for misfuelling.
