# Ballyvoy: AdBlue in the Diesel Tank? Leave It Off

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the motor off then leave your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system pulls it in.

A drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is around Ballyvoy, is usually all AdBlue in a diesel tank takes — if it's caught before your motor has been run.

First, ring us on 0333 366 0103.

## Ballyvoy, AdBlue in your diesel tank: what to do at once

To do:

- Pocket the keys, which stops anyone switching the electrics on.

- If you are anywhere close to moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or your receipt shows us the fluid and the quantity, so don't bin it out.

- Ring us from where you are. A postcode starting BT54 6, or the name of the closest street, gets our van to you without a search.

Don't do these:

- Not even briefly, and not to shift your car: your motor remains off.

- Turning the key to ignition by itself sets your pump going on plenty of diesels. Skip it.

- Adding extra diesel does not help: AdBlue separates out instead of blending.

- Even a short distance up B842 is too far to drive it.

- Don't try to drain it yourself by the roadside.

Rolling your car away from the island is a job for staff to help with, wherever Ballyvoy forecourt you're on, the the nearest petrol station included.

If you are on your own drive, leave the vehicle exactly where it sits.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

The engine is not what AdBlue is made for; your exhaust is.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to fresh it.

Nothing in an injection pump is designed for this fluid — and none of it was meant to go through one.

Fuel mixes; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

The pickup sucks fuel from the lowest part of the tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: being heavier than diesel, it sinks.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Ballintoy last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the straightforward case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

From there it does two kinds of damage.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filters and narrow channels; and, since it attacks some metals, each part it reaches suffers for as long as it remains inside.

Pipes holding AdBlue spell damage by morning for a vehicle sitting in Ballyvoy. Just in the tank, it stays stable.

Then there's the water: it offers no protection to the components that need it the most — the injection pump and each injector.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is frequently more major than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on another forecourt nearby's forecourt leaves your fuel watery — that's the whole fault.

No damage is done while it stays unused, blended into the diesel — only when the engine runs on it.

AdBlue in a diesel is a problem of the wrong substance altogether.

It cannot just be run through, since it does not burn.

It doesn't stay mixed, and so it cannot be diluted. And crystals and corrosion do not wash out with the next tank of fuel. That's why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than almost anywhere else, whether the car is in Armoy or the middle of Ballyvoy.

The same good news applies as with petrol.

Wherever around County Antrim the car has come to rest, an unstarted motor means the AdBlue yet inside the reservoir: the simplest part of any fuel system to empty.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Ballyvoy: how it ends up there

Many cars put the AdBlue filler alongside the diesel cap, occasionally under one flap, and in dim light the two may look the same. Nobody means it.

A container picked up while driving home and tipped in outside the house, instead of at the filling station, is the usual route.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

Hurrying, outside the local primary school, after a warning light came on during the school run, a parent tops up your car.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Dunaverty Court.

Another pattern: dim light, a pub car park by the pub in the village, and a driver using that flap for the first time.

The least known cars see it most — rentals, new cars, company cars, and the spare vehicle of a home with one of each fuel types.

Same mistake, an identical first step — keep it off — anywhere you are around Ballyvoy or the remainder of County Antrim.

## Ballyvoy: started your engine with AdBlue in your diesel tank?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer in that tank.

Given any running time, it goes on to the injection pump and every injector, having passed via your filter and lines.

Perhaps returning from the green space at the edge of the village, or midway across Ballyvoy, the engine might go lumpy, smoke, lose power, flash the dash or cut out.

Pull over when safe. Switch off. Keep it off instead of testing it again.

Every start pulls more of that through.

On the M77, over 50 miles from Ballyvoy, the next junction is where to leave, and somewhere sensible is where to stop — not driving on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That is why a hop across Ballyvoy to park near the centre and a drive of under 50 miles towards Belfast are such distinct jobs.

Roughly how far it had come is worth telling us.

There is more to clean out once the motor has been run, and we do all of it where the car has stopped.

When it's spotted soon, long-term damage is very uncommon.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Ballyvoy?

We come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Ballyvoy: a side street close to a street just off the centre, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Which fluid was put in, roughly the quantity, and whether your motor has been run: our technicians check before all else, since those decide the work.

Next, emptying the tank right there removes the polluted diesel along with the AdBlue in one go.

With AdBlue, more so than with petrol, the flush matters: the fuel system is cleaned right through since what remains will not flush away unaided.

After that, the filter: cleaned, or changed if it must be. After that clean diesel, then a test of the vehicle.

About half an hour on site is usual for most jobs when the motor hasn't run.

The pumps are explosion-proof, safe on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Last, the system is bled with new diesel.

Starting the car comes next, and then you head off from where your car is parked, outside the nearest station or on a drive around Ballyvoy.

The test before we go is that it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

The entire job is done where the car is, so it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Afterwards, there is paperwork for the insurer: a VAT invoice plus a written report from the engineer.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Ballyvoy: the cost of fixing it

Every job differs, so no single price is honest.

What moves the cost is, first, whether your engine has run and for how long; then how much AdBlue went in; and after that where the car is and whether our van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind the far end of the built-up part.

For that in mind, every call from Ballyvoy begins with the same trio — what was put in, how much, if the engine ran — ahead of any quote.

Those answers turn a range into a straight price.

Priced by phone before the van sets out, it is settled that day — card or phone, no deposit.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours while we are on the way.
