# AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Balnamore: How It Occurs and How to Avoid It

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the motor and your ignition off then ring 0333 366 0103.

In Balnamore, catching it before the engine turns normally leaves a drain and a full flush on the spot.

If you are reading before it has happened, the remainder of this page is about why it takes place and how to make sure it does not.

## AdBlue in a diesel car: two tanks, two fillers

Diesel goes to your engine — but plenty of current diesels seen round Balnamore and Finvoy carry a second fluid too.

Kept in a tank of its own, AdBlue is fed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Every tank has a filler of its own.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

The AdBlue side is filled far less often, normally from a bottle, and usually by someone who has to stop and think where it goes.

The error lives in that gap.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Balnamore: how it takes place

It's rarely carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

The warning comes first. As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and if it runs out completely, the car drops into limp mode. So the top-up is done in a hurry: on a drive off B842 before work, or in the car park outside the pub in the village on the way home.

The old car's filler is where your hand reaches — but a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers elsewhere. That's the second factor: a new motor.

No part halts the tip once it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

It's a few seconds, whether out in Bendooragh or right in the centre of Balnamore.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from the diesel filler

Whether a Balnamore forecourt or a driveway out in Aghadowey, take a few seconds over these before anything goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap usually is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- On many motors, size gives it away: AdBlue has the smaller filler neck.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where your filler is if it's not by the diesel cap, and the handbook says which.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask as you pick up a hire car or company car — from the nearest station's car park, say — rather than when the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching the diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in County Antrim that is.

- Pull in somewhere level, engine off, with time to spare — not rushing on the side of Dunaverty Court.

- Daft as it sounds, speaking "AdBlue" aloud while you unscrew the cap works — after you have located the filler and read it.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently is best, through the bottle's own spout, till it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Only then, start the car: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure your diesel cap was never opened.

Stop there if you find, at stage two or three, that you've already poured into your diesel side.

Leave out stage five entirely.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Balnamore already?

Short list, then. Top of it: your motor stays off.

On plenty of diesels the ignition alone runs the fuel pump, so do not switch it on.

Do not top up with diesel to thin it: AdBlue does not mix with diesel, it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is sucked from.

At a forecourt — the nearest petrol station, another forecourt nearby or another — the staff will normally help roll the vehicle clear, when you ask.

Your own drive around Balnamore is where it stays.

When your engine has been run by now, pull over safely then switch it off.

Balnamore sits over 50 miles from the M77; there, take the next junction.

Distance matters — a quick hop across Balnamore is a smaller job than heading under 50 miles to Derry — so say roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when our technicians arrive around Balnamore

We come to your car wherever it has stopped, whether that is outside the local primary school, near the centre or on your own driveway.

Which liquid got in, the quantity, and if it ran: our technicians ask because the answers decide both work and quote.

Nobody heads out before you have had our price by phone.

Emptying the tank comes next, followed by a thorough flush of the system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it does not wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

The fuel filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; fresh diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

The engine is fired up next and tested to confirm it runs properly, all before our technicians head off.

If your motor has not run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we are there, using pumps that are safe on a working forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Payment happens on the day, not upfront, and you receive the paperwork an insurer wants: an engineer's report and a VAT invoice.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so use the wait to check yours.

## AdBlue drains across County Antrim, Balnamore included

Ballymoney and Ballybogy are among the towns around Balnamore, a small village, that the same teams cover, over BT postcodes.

Quickest of all: give a BT53 7 postcode for our van.

Shifting the car isn't necessary.

Our engineers drain it where it is — a side street close to a street just off the centre, a lay-by on the way to the green space at the edge of the village, a driveway.

Ring and ask rather than assuming if you're close to a boundary, or somewhere hard to explain, like the back of the far end of the built-up part.

## In short, for Balnamore motorists

First, the cap; after that, the tip.

Petrol in Diesel drains it where it stands, anywhere around County Antrim, if AdBlue has gone in the diesel tank regardless — so leave the car off then ring 0333 366 0103.
