# How It Occurs and How to Prevent It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bankfoot

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave your motor and the ignition off and phone 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is usually a drain and a thorough flush, done where the car is in Bankfoot.

Nothing happened yet? Further down, the rest of the page explains the reasons it takes place and the how to avoid it for good.

## Two fillers, two tanks: AdBlue in a diesel vehicle

Plenty of newer diesels around Staygate, like those in Bankfoot, run on two fluids; your engine gets only your diesel.

The exhaust, not the engine, is where AdBlue goes: dosed into the fumes to fresh them, from its own tank.

Different tanks, separate fillers.

Many of cars have a single flap for both, while others put the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

At the petrol pump, your diesel side is topped up all the time.

Much less frequently, the AdBlue side is filled — normally from a bottle, by a person working out where it goes.

It is in that gap that the slip happens.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bankfoot: how it happens

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is seldom one of them.

On a drive off Rooley Lane before work, or in the car park at The Red Lion on the way home: that's where the hurried top-up happens. What is the reason for the rush? As AdBlue runs low the vehicle tells you, and once it's gone, limp mode follows.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it knew on the old motor — since a hire car, a new vehicle or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one didn't.

And the bottle fits. A bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as easily as an AdBlue one, and so nothing stops the tip once it has started.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Bankfoot or out in Truncliffe.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Before you tip anything, whether on a drive in Chapel Green or a forecourt around Bankfoot, check these. They take a few seconds.

- Blue and lettering: an AdBlue cap is regularly blue, or says "AdBlue", where a diesel cap normally does not. Go by the cap, not where it sits.

- On plenty of motors, the size gives it away: AdBlue gets the smaller filler neck.

- The flap. Look inside your fuel flap for a label. Plenty of vehicles say there which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it next to your diesel filler? In that case check below the bonnet or in your boot — the handbook will say where.

- The person who drove the vehicle last. On a hire or company car collected from somewhere like the car park at Low Moor, ask before you leave, not when the light comes on.

## How to top up without AdBlue in your diesel tank

The day the light comes on, wherever around West Yorkshire, follow this routine.

- Switch off once parked — level ground, engine off, and never rushed beside Manchester Road on the verge.

- Daft as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew the cap does the trick — after you have located your filler and read it.

- The diesel cap stays on. When the two sit under a flap, confirm it is shut before the bottle comes up.

- Slowly does it, through the bottle's own spout, till it's full or the bottle is empty.

- Only after that, start the vehicle: close the cap, check a second time, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

If at step two or three you find you have already poured into your diesel side, stop there.

Leave out stage five altogether.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank already, in Bankfoot?

Don't start your engine: that's where the short order of things begins.

Don't switch the ignition on; on plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

Topping up with diesel won't thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of the tank, just where the fuel is drawn from.

At a forecourt — Morrisons, Shell or another — the staff will usually help push your car away, when you ask.

Your own driveway around Bankfoot is the place it stays.

Stop as soon as it is safe and switch off, if the motor has already run.

On the M606, under a mile from Bankfoot, that means the next exit.

About how far did it go? Crossing Bankfoot is less a job than a trip of under 3 miles towards Bradford, and so say.

## Our arrival in Bankfoot, and what happens next

By Bankfoot Primary School, near Bankfoot Gospel Hall or on your own driveway: wherever the vehicle has stopped, we come to it.

Those answers determine this work and the price, and so our engineers ask what was put in, roughly how much, and if it has run.

You get that price on the phone, before anyone heads out.

Emptying the tank comes next, then a thorough flush of the fuel system.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue leaves crystals and eats at certain fuel-system metals, and none of that washes out by itself. Hence it matters more.

Your filter is flushed, or replaced where it needs to be; clean diesel goes in; and your car is tested.

Before leaving, our engineers fire it up and check that it is running correctly.

Unrun cars mostly mean a half-hour job after arrival. The equipment is safe on a live forecourt, and quiet enough for a residential street after dark.

No money in advance; you settle up that day. Afterwards, the VAT invoice and the report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It is worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.
