# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Bankhead

If AdBlue has gone into the diesel tank, keep your engine off and leave your ignition off.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

As it is water-based, it won't burn and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes when the pump starts pulling it.

If your engine hasn't run yet, AdBlue in a diesel tank is generally drained and carefully cleaned where the vehicle stands in Bankhead.

First, phone us on 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank around Bankhead: the first few minutes

Do:

- Keys out — that way no one can power anything on.

- Close to moving traffic? So put your hazards on.

- So you can tell us which liquid it was and about how much, keep the till receipt or the empty bottle.

- Tell us a postcode starting AB21 9, or whichever street lies nearest, and the van reaches you directly — so call wherever you stand.

Not to do:

- No starting your motor — not briefly, not to shift your car.

- Many diesels run their pump the moment your ignition comes on, and so leave the car off.

- No extra fuel added. The AdBlue will not mix, and so it is wasted.

- Never drive it anywhere, not even a short stretch up Bankhead Road.

- Don't try to drain it yourself at the roadside.

Rolling the car off the pumps is a job for staff to help with, whichever Bankhead forecourt you're on, the Shell or any other.

Parked on your own drive? Then it remains just where it is.

## What does AdBlue do in a diesel tank?

Not the engine but the exhaust is where AdBlue belongs.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into the exhaust gas to clean it.

A fuel pump is not designed to take it, and AdBlue was never intended to go through one.

Inside a diesel tank it behaves very differently from fuel. It does not mix in.

It sinks, because it is denser than diesel, and pools low where the intake takes its fuel from.

The first thing the system pulls through, once it runs, is the AdBlue. So a car that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Heathryfold last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the simple case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of that tank, and nothing has sucked it in.

From there it causes two kinds of damage.

As its water goes, the urea left behind crystallises, and the crystals block filters and settle in fine passages. And it's corrosive to some of the metals a fuel system is made from, and so it keeps labouring on the parts it gets to for as long as it remains there.

Overnight, a car parked in Bankhead with AdBlue through its pipework grows worse; if it's only inside your tank, nothing changes.

Water protects nothing. The injection pump and every injector depend on diesel flowing past them, so the water content harms them in its own right.

## Petrol or AdBlue in a diesel: why AdBlue is often worse

Top up a diesel with petrol in error at the Tesco Extra, and this problem is thinned fuel.

It mixes with the diesel, and while it's inside that tank it does no damage; the harm comes from running the motor on it.

With AdBlue in a diesel, the fluid as such is plainly the wrong one.

It does not burn, and so it cannot just be run through.

It doesn't stay mixed, so it can't be diluted. And crystals and corrosion don't wash out with the next tank of fuel. That is why the flush matters more with AdBlue than with petrol, and why starting the engine "to see" costs more here than nearly anywhere else, whether your car is in Newhills or the middle of Bankhead.

As with petrol, there is good news.

Clearing a tank is the easiest part on a fuel system, and without running, the AdBlue stays in it — anywhere around Aberdeen City the vehicle sits.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Bankhead: how it ends up there

Nobody means to do it. The AdBlue filler on plenty of motors rests right next to the diesel filler, at times under the same flap, and the two caps can look alike in poor light.

It mostly takes place at home, from a container grabbed en route home, rather than at the forecourt.

The ways it happens are few and familiar.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside the local primary school.

Close to Station Road, a driver pours a container in at home after work.

Or the car is topped up in the car park at The Bankhead Inn, in poor light, by somebody who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the motors people know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second car of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Leave it switched off: that's the first step to the same mistake, wherever around Bankhead or the rest of Aberdeen City you happen to be.

## Bankhead: started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

It has been sucked through the filter and the lines, and if your motor ran for any time, it has reached the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or stalling: any might show up, perhaps midway across Bankhead or returning from New Polo Park.

Once safe, pull over and switch it off — with no restarting to test.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Bankhead sits over 50 miles from the M90; if you were on it, leave at the first junction and stop somewhere safe instead of carrying on.

Every mile carries the AdBlue deeper in. That is why crossing Bankhead to park near Aberdeen Hindu Temple and a drive of under 5 miles towards Aberdeen are very different jobs.

About how far it had come is worth telling us.

Our engineers do all of the flushing where your car has stopped, and once your engine has run there is more of it.

Noticed early, it very seldom leaves lasting damage.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve in Bankhead?

Our technicians come to your car, wherever it has stopped in Bankhead: a side street near Newhills War Memorial, a drive, a lay-by or a forecourt.

Before anything else our technicians ask what went in, about how much, and whether the engine has run, because those replies decide this work.

The polluted diesel and the urea leave as one after the tank is emptied, right there.

Residue from AdBlue won't flush out unaided, so the fuel system gets a careful flush, which counts far more here than with petrol.

Testing the vehicle comes at the end, once fresh diesel goes in and your filter is cleaned or, where needed, swapped.

Engine not run? In that case count on about half an hour on site for most jobs.

The equipment is explosion-proof, and so a busy forecourt is no problem, and it's hushed enough for a residential street after dark.

New diesel goes in to bleed the fuel system, and that is the last step.

You head off as soon as our engineers have started it, and it makes no difference whether your car is on a driveway around Bankhead or in a space at Dyce.

We make sure it runs properly on fresh diesel before leaving.

Because the job is done in full where your car is, a garage never comes into it.

Your insurer will want an engineer's report and the VAT invoice — both yours once the job is done.

## Bankhead and Aberdeen City: AdBlue drains across the area

AdBlue call-outs around Bankhead are passed to vans that serve the towns around it — Upper Persley, Bucksburn plus Stoneywood — and most of Aberdeen City beyond, across AB postcodes.

Assuming won't help close to a county line or somewhere hard to describe; ring and check.

Bankhead is a residential suburb, and an on-site drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our technicians drain it where it sits, so it never needs to be moved to us.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Bankhead

There is no honest single price, because the jobs are not the same.

The cost moves first with how long, if at all, the engine has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether a technician can reach it safely, which is simpler on an open drive than in a tight spot behind St Machar's Church.

What was put in, how much, plus if it ran: each Bankhead enquiry opens by asking precisely those, ahead of a quote, never afterwards.

Those replies shrink a range down to a single number.

The price is given on the call, before a van leaves; settling up comes on the day, by card or over the phone, with nothing upfront.

As the van is travelling, check your policy: plenty cover misfuelling.

## In Bankhead and still beside the car?

Then the most handy thing you can do is nothing to the car.

Keys out, engine off, ignition off.

Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us it is AdBlue, about how much, and if it's run. Petrol in Diesel takes it from there, around Bankhead or anywhere around Aberdeen City.
