# Bar Moor: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

Pause here a minute when the diesel tank already has AdBlue in it: ignition off, motor off, then call 0333 366 0103.

Normally, when your motor hasn't turned, it is emptied and fully cleaned where your car is around Bar Moor.

The remainder of this page explains why it occurs and how to make sure it does not — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel car need its own filler?

Diesel goes to your engine — but many modern diesels seen round Bar Moor and Ryton hold another fluid as well.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Separate tanks, different fillers.

Many of vehicles have a single flap for both, while some move the AdBlue filler to your boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel goes in at each forecourt call-out, week in, week out.

Someone who has to stop and think where it goes usually fills the AdBlue side, from a bottle, and much less frequently.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## How AdBlue in the diesel tank occurs in Bar Moor

Three things tend to line up, and carelessness is rarely one of them.

On a drive off Meadow Lane before work, or in the car park outside Fox and Hounds on the way home: that is where the rushed top-up happens. Why the rush? As AdBlue runs low your car warns you, and if it is empty, limp mode follows.

Then your car is unfamiliar. A hire car, a new car or a company car puts the fillers where your last one did not, and the hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old one.

Third, the spout fits: diesel filler or AdBlue filler, it slides in just as easily, and once the tip begins, no part halts it.

It's a few seconds, be it out in Crawcrook or bang in the centre of Bar Moor.

## The AdBlue filler and your diesel filler: telling them apart

Look at these first, at a forecourt in Bar Moor or a driveway over in Clara Vale. A few seconds, that's all.

- Where it sits can mislead; the cap does not. AdBlue ones tend to be blue or carry the name "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- The size. On many vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside the fuel flap: many vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- Can't find it beside the diesel inlet? In that case look below the bonnet or inside the boot — the handbook says where.

- Whoever had it before will know. Ask when you collect a hire car or company car — from Wylam's car park, say — not when the warning comes on.

## Topping up AdBlue without it reaching your diesel tank

Anywhere around Tyne and Wear the light comes on, here is a routine for that day.

- Not in a rush on the side of Windsor Terrace, not on a slope, not with your engine running: park then switch off first.

- Silly as it sounds, saying "AdBlue" out loud while you unscrew the cap works — once you have found your filler and read the cap.

- Leave your diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check your diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Gently does it, through the bottle's own spout, until it is full or the bottle is empty.

- Before you start the vehicle, close the cap and look again that the diesel cap never opened off.

Spot at step two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop right there.

Do not go on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Bar Moor?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start the motor.

The fuel pump starts on plenty of diesels as soon as the ignition is switched on — so leave it off.

Topping up with diesel will not thin it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of that tank, just where the fuel is taken from.

Ask the staff to help roll your car away from the petrol pump if you are at a forecourt — the Esso, the JET or somewhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Bar Moor.

Already run? Pull over when it's sensible, then switch off.

On the Central Motorway East, under 10 miles from Bar Moor, that means the next junction.

A short hop across Bar Moor is a smaller job than a run towards Newcastle upon Tyne, under 10 miles away, and so tell us roughly how far it went.

## What occurs when we turn up around Bar Moor

Wherever the vehicle came to rest, be it by Emmaville Primary School, near Emmaville Hall or on your own drive, the van comes to it.

Those replies decide this work and our price, so we ask what was put in, about how much, and if it has run.

Nobody sets off before you have heard our price by phone.

The system is then rinsed thoroughly, after your tank is emptied.

Unlike petrol, AdBlue forms crystals and attacks some fuel-system metals, and none of that clears away by itself. Hence it counts more.

The filter cleaned or, where it must be, swapped; clean diesel in; and then a test of your vehicle.

After that our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs properly before we leave.

Most jobs are done in roughly half an hour once our technicians get there, as long as the motor has not run — and the pumps our engineers use are fine on a live forecourt and quiet at night beside a house.

You pay on the day, with nothing upfront, and get a VAT invoice and an engineer report for your insurer.

Misfuelling cover is included in many insurance policies — and so make use of the wait to check yours.
