# Barking: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Avoid It?

If AdBlue is already in your diesel tank, stop reading for a moment: leave the engine and the ignition off and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before your motor runs, it is normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is in Barking.

The rest of this page explains why it takes place and how to ensure it doesn't — handy if you are reading ahead of time.

## AdBlue in a diesel car, and its separate tank

Not one fluid but two: that is how many newer diesels around Barking and Little Ilford run, with diesel for your engine.

AdBlue goes to the exhaust, where it is sprayed into the gas to clean it, and it lives in a tank of its own.

Every tank has one filler of its own.

On a lot of vehicles the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in your boot or under the bonnet.

At the pump, your diesel side is topped up constantly.

Rarely filled, AdBlue usually goes in out of a bottle, poured by someone who must stop and think which cap to use.

The mistake grows in that gap between them.

## Barking: how AdBlue in your diesel tank takes place

Seldom is it carelessness: normally three things line up.

First, the warning. Low AdBlue brings a message from the vehicle, and running dry means limp mode — so a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Linton Road, or at The Spotted Dog on the way home that evening.

Then, your hand reaches for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a rental car, a new motor or a company car puts the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

A spout-topped bottle meets no resistance at a diesel filler no more than at an AdBlue one. And so the pour, once begun, keeps on.

It takes a few seconds, whether in Barking Wharf Square or bang in the centre of Barking.

## How to tell the AdBlue filler from the diesel one

Whether a Barking forecourt or a driveway out in East Ham, take a few seconds over these before any goes in.

- The cap. The AdBlue cap is commonly blue, or marked "AdBlue". Your diesel cap normally is not. Read it rather than going by position.

- The size. On plenty of cars the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of cars have a label there saying which fuel goes where.

- The handbook says where it is if the filler isn't next to the diesel cap: your boot, or under the bonnet.

- Ask the person who drove it last — before you leave, not when the light comes on — if you collect a hire or company car from somewhere like the car park at the nearest station.

## Keeping AdBlue out of your diesel tank when you top up

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever across Greater London that is.

- Stop on level, engine off, with time in hand — never rushing on the side of East Street.

- Locate the AdBlue filler, read the cap, and say the word "AdBlue" aloud as unscrewing it. It seems silly. It does the trick.

- Leave the diesel cap on. If both sit under one flap, check the diesel cap is still closed before you lift the bottle.

- Finish once the tank fills or the bottle is empty; until then, pour gently using its built-in spout.

- Only after that, start the car: close the cap, check again, and make sure the diesel cap was never opened.

Find at step two or three that it's already gone into your diesel side? So stop right there.

Don't carry on to step five.

## Already put AdBlue in the diesel tank in Barking?

Then the order of things is short. Do not start your engine.

Don't switch your ignition on; on many diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

AdBlue does not mix with diesel — it sinks to the bottom of your tank, where your fuel is drawn from — so don't top up with diesel to dilute it.

Ask the staff to help roll your car away from the pump if you're on a forecourt — the Shell, the Tesco Petrol or anywhere else.

Leave it where it is if you're on your own drive around Barking.

If your motor has already run, stop as soon as it is safe and switch off.

The next junction means where to leave when you are on the M11, under 5 miles from Barking.

Mileage counts — a short hop across Barking is a smaller job than heading under 10 miles towards London — so say roughly how far it went.

## Our arrival around Barking, and what takes place next

By St Margarets CofE Primary School, near Excel Women's Centre or on your own drive: wherever the vehicle has stopped, our technicians come to it.

The answers decide this work and the quote, so we ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run.

The price comes on the call, ahead of any van leaving.

Then that tank is cleared and your system flushed thoroughly.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why that counts more here than with petrol.

A test is last: before that, clean diesel goes in, and the filter is cleaned or changed if necessary.

We do not go until it has been started and is running correctly.

Unstarted cars usually need a half-hour job from the moment we arrive. The kit is fine on a busy forecourt, and hushed enough for a driveway after dark.

No money upfront; you settle up on the day. At the end, a VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for the insurer.

It's worth looking at your insurance while we travel to you: misfuelling cover is included with many policies.

As a small village, Barking has the same vans as nearby areas — Loxford, Wallend — right through IG postcodes and the wider area beyond.

A postcode starting IG11 8 gets our van to you fastest.

Shifting your car is not necessary.

Draining happens on the spot, whether a driveway, a road by Vicarage Field Shopping Centre, or a layby on the way to Barking Central Arboretum.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to describe like the back of Folly Wall, ring and ask instead of guessing.
