# Barming: How Does AdBlue End Up in a Diesel Tank, and How Do You Prevent It?

AdBlue already in your diesel tank? Then set this page down a moment, leave the ignition and motor off, and ring 0333 366 0103.

Caught before the motor runs, it's normally a drain and a thorough flush, done where your car is around Barming.

The rest of this page covers why it occurs and how to make sure it doesn't — handy if you are reading before it has happened.

## Why does AdBlue in a diesel motor need its own filler?

Plenty of modern diesels on the roads around Barming and Hoppers Corner carry two liquids, not one. Diesel goes to the motor.

AdBlue's own tank keeps it, and from there it goes to your exhaust, and there a spray cleans the fumes.

There is a filler on each tank.

On a lot of motors the two sit side by side under the same flap; on others the AdBlue filler is in the boot or under the bonnet.

Diesel gets filled at each forecourt visit, week in, week out.

Rarely topped up, AdBlue usually goes in from a bottle, tipped by someone who has to stop and think what cap to use.

It is in that gap that the mistake lives.

## Barming: how AdBlue in your diesel tank occurs

It's seldom carelessness. Three things tend to line up.

To start with, the warning. Low AdBlue triggers a warning from the vehicle, and running dry leads to limp mode — hence a hurried top-up, perhaps before work off Bull Orchard, perhaps at The Bull Inn on the way home that evening.

Next, the hand goes for the cap it would have used on the old car — because a hire car, a new car or a company car places the fillers somewhere your last one did not.

No part halts the pour after it has started, because a bottle with a spout goes into a diesel filler as readily as an AdBlue one. The bottle fits.

The same few seconds decide it, in the middle of Barming or out in East Barming.

## Telling the AdBlue filler from your diesel filler

A couple of seconds is all the checks take — so run through them before you pour anything, on a drive in Cherry Orchard or a forecourt in Barming.

- Position misleads; the cap does not. AdBlue caps are often blue or carry the word "AdBlue" — diesel ones usually don't.

- The size. On plenty of vehicles the AdBlue filler neck is the smaller of the two.

- Look inside your fuel flap: plenty of vehicles carry a label there showing which fuel goes where.

- In your boot or under the bonnet: that is where the filler is if it is not by the diesel cap, and the handbook tells you which.

- Collecting a hire or company car, say at the car park at East Farleigh? Check with whoever drove the car last before leaving, not when the light goes on.

## AdBlue top-ups that never reach your diesel tank

A routine for the day the light comes on, wherever in Kent that is.

- Park then switch off. Not on a slope, not with the engine running, and not in a rush on the side of North Street.

- Find the AdBlue filler and read the cap. Say "AdBlue" out loud as you unscrew it. It sounds daft and it works.

- Both behind one flap? So confirm the lid on the diesel side stays shut before lifting the bottle.

- Stop once your tank is topped up or the bottle runs dry; before that, tip slowly using the built-in spout.

- Shut the cap, then look again — making sure the diesel cap stayed closed throughout. Only then, start the vehicle.

Spot at stage two or three that it has already gone into your diesel side? Then stop just there.

Step five stays off limits.

## Put AdBlue in your diesel tank in Barming already?

The short order of things, starting with not starting your motor.

The fuel pump runs on plenty of diesels as soon as your ignition is switched on — and so leave it off.

Filling up with diesel will not weaken it: rather than mixing, AdBlue drops to the bottom of your tank, right where fuel is drawn from.

On a forecourt — Esso, BP or any other — the attendants will usually help roll the vehicle away, when you ask.

Leave it where it is if you are on your own driveway around Barming.

Already started? Pull over when it is safe, then switch off.

Leave the M20 — under 3 miles out of Barming — at the next junction.

Tell us roughly how far it went: a run towards Southend-on-Sea, under 25 miles away, is a bigger job than a short hop across Barming.

## Barming: what happens when our engineers get there

Anywhere your car came to rest, be it by Barming Primary School, near Barming Scout and Guide Group or on your own drive, the van travels to it.

We ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether it's run, since those answers settle the work and the quote.

You hear that price on the phone, before anyone sets off.

After that: draining, then a thorough flush of the whole system.

AdBlue crystallises and is corrosive to some of the metals in a fuel system, and so it doesn't wash out on its own — which is why the flush counts more with AdBlue than with petrol.

Once the fuel filter has been flushed — or replaced, if required — clean diesel goes in, and then the vehicle gets tested.

The engine is fired up next and checked to make sure it runs properly, all before we leave.

If the motor hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once we're there, using pumps that are fine on a busy forecourt and quiet enough to use outside a house after dark.

Nothing upfront; you settle up that day. At the end, the VAT invoice and a report from the engineer go to you for your insurer.

Many insurance policies include misfuelling cover, so it's worth checking yours whilst we're on the way.
