# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Barnton

AdBlue in your diesel tank? Then leave your motor off — and the ignition too.

AdBlue is urea mixed in water.

As it is water-based, it will not ignite and won't blend with diesel; trouble just comes when the pump starts pulling it.

In Barnton, AdBlue in a diesel tank found before the motor runs usually comes down to a drain and a thorough flush, just where the vehicle is.

Ring 0333 366 0103 before you do anything else.

## What to do straight away, Barnton: AdBlue in the diesel tank

To do:

- So nobody can turn your ignition on, pull the keys away.

- Hazards on, if moving traffic is anywhere near.

- Keep the till receipt or the empty bottle, so you can tell us what got in and about how much.

- Our van locates you quickest with a postcode starting EH4 6, or simply the name of a street close by, so call from the car.

Do not:

- Not even briefly, and not to roll your vehicle: your engine remains off.

- Do not switch the ignition on. On plenty of diesels that alone runs the fuel pump.

- Do not top up with diesel to dilute it. AdBlue does not dilute in diesel; it separates out.

- Don't drive it anywhere, not even a short distance up Whitehouse Road.

- No draining it yourself, at all, on the verge.

The staff working at any Barnton forecourt — the Shell among them — will normally lend a hand pushing it aside if you ask.

Parked on your own driveway? Then it remains just as it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank: what it does

Made for the exhaust, AdBlue has no place in the motor.

Kept in a dedicated tank, it is injected into the exhaust stream to clean the gases.

Nothing in it is meant to pass through a fuel pump, and nothing in a fuel pump is built to handle it.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after poured in, won't. Its behaviour is not at all like fuel's.

It is heavier than diesel, and so it sinks and collects at the bottom of that tank, which is where the pickup draws fuel from.

The first thing the system pulls through, after it runs, is the AdBlue. So a motor that had AdBlue poured in on a drive in Drumbrae last night, and hasn't been started since, is still the easy case: the AdBlue is lying at the bottom of the tank, and nothing has drawn it in.

Two kinds of damage come from there.

What is left once the water evaporates is urea, which forms crystals: they lodge in tiny channels and block filters. Worse, it eats at certain metals in a fuel system, and keeps going till it is cleared out.

A car left sitting in Barnton with AdBlue already in its lines is worse by the morning; one with AdBlue only in its tank is not.

The water in it does damage of its own: the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors rely on diesel to lubricate them, and water offers them nothing.

## Why is AdBlue in a diesel commonly the bigger problem?

A problem of thin fuel is what you end up with from fuelling a diesel with petrol at the Tesco.

Mixed through your diesel and left unused, it is harmless for now; running the engine is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is a different problem: not thin fuel, but no fuel at all.

Since it doesn't burn, running it through is not an option.

Whether your vehicle sits in Cramond or the heart of Barnton, firing it up "to see" costs more in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters more. The reasons: it won't remain mixed, and so watering it down fails; and deposits and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

If your engine hasn't run, the AdBlue is still inside the tank, and that tank is the easiest part of a fuel system to clear, wherever across City of Edinburgh the car is standing.

## How does AdBlue end up in a diesel tank in Barnton?

After dark, two caps together — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally under one flap — can appear the same. Nobody means it; plenty of designs invite it.

Most of the time it happens with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the pump.

Usually, it takes place in one of a few familiar ways.

A warning light comes on during the school run, and the top-up occurs in a hurry outside the local primary school.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Braehead Bank.

Or your car is topped up in the car park outside Mid Yoken Pub, in poor light, by someone who has never opened that flap before.

It takes place most in the cars drivers know least: a hire car, a new vehicle, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

An identical mistake, same first response — leave it switched off — anywhere you are in Barnton or the rest of City of Edinburgh.

## Started the motor with AdBlue in the diesel tank in Barnton?

The AdBlue has left your tank, then.

Your filter and pipework have had it pulled through, and any running takes it on to the high-pressure pump and each injector.

Rough running, smoke, dropping power, dashboard warnings or cutting out: each may show up, maybe part way across Barnton or coming back from The Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh.

Once safe, stop and switch it off — with no turning it on again to see.

With each start, more of it is pulled through.

Leave the M8, under 3 miles from Barnton, by the first junction and park safely, rather than carrying on.

Mileage matters: each mile carries the AdBlue further into your system, and so driving towards Edinburgh, under 5 miles away, makes a much bigger job than crossing Barnton to the car park by Pet Margorie Plaque.

Let us know roughly how far it had come.

There is more to clean out once the motor has been run, and we do all of it where the vehicle has come to a stop.

If it's noticed quickly, permanent damage is very rare.

## What does an AdBlue drain on a diesel involve around Barnton?

Wherever it has stopped around Barnton — a forecourt, a layby, a driveway, a road beside James V attacked at Cramond Brig A.D.1532 — our van travels to the car.

The work depends on three replies, and our engineers get first — which fluid got in, the quantity, and whether your motor has turned over.

The polluted diesel and the urea come out together after that tank is emptied, right there.

What remains from AdBlue will not wash out unaided, so the fuel system gets a full flush, which matters much more here than with petrol.

A test of the vehicle comes at the end, once fresh diesel is added and your filter is flushed or, where needed, swapped.

If the engine hasn't run, the majority of jobs take about half an hour once our engineers are there.

Explosion-proof pumps mean a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough to spare the street at night.

The final step is to prime the system on fresh diesel.

Whether it's a parking bay at Edinburgh Gateway or a drive in Barnton, that is where our engineers start the car and you head off.

It is tested on clean diesel to be sure it runs smoothly before our engineers head off.

No workshop is required at any point, with the whole job done then and there.

Insurers ask for a VAT invoice and an engineer report, and both come at the end.

## About Barnton, briefly

Barnton is a coastal suburban area in the City of Edinburgh, situated approximately 4.6 miles northwest of Edinburgh's city centre. Barnton sits at an elevation of 42 metres, overlooking the Firth of Forth, and is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock. Barnton is close to several nearby places, including Braepark, Cammo, and Cramond Bridge, and is home to a population of around 3949 residents.

## AdBlue drains across Barnton and City of Edinburgh

AdBlue call-outs around Barnton go to vans that cover the towns near it — Braepark, Cammo as well as Cramond Bridge — and much of City of Edinburgh further out, throughout EH postcodes.

If you're near a border, or somewhere hard to explain, ring and ask instead of assuming.

Barnton is a residential suburb, and a call-out drain suits it: whether your car is on a home drive, a residential street, a car park or a forecourt, our engineers drain it where it stands, and so it never needs to be moved to us.

## Barnton: what AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to fix

There's no honest single quote, because the jobs are not the same.

The price changes first with how long, if at all, your engine has been running, and next with the quantity of AdBlue that was put in. After that it rests on where the car is and whether a van can reach it safely, which is easier on an open drive than in a tight spot behind St Kentigern’s RC Church.

For that in mind, each call from Barnton opens by asking the identical trio — what was put in, how much, whether it ran — before any quote.

When those are known, a range turns into one fixed figure.

Before a van heads out, you hear the quote by phone. And payment is on the day, card or over the phone, with nothing in advance.

Misfuelling cover is part of plenty of insurance policies, so it pays to look at yours before the van arrives.

## Barnton: still alongside the car?

Then the most helpful thing you can do is nothing to your car.

Ignition off, motor off, keys out.

Tell us it's AdBlue, about what quantity, and whether it ran, on 0333 366 0103. From there Petrol in Diesel handles it, across Barnton or wherever within City of Edinburgh.
