# Don't Start It: AdBlue in a Diesel Tank in Barripper

If AdBlue has got into the diesel tank, leave the engine off then keep your ignition off.

In plain terms, AdBlue is just urea in water.

It does not burn, it does not mix with diesel, and the harm it does begins when the system pulls it in.

In Barripper, AdBlue in a diesel tank caught before the engine runs normally means a drain and a thorough flush, right where your car is.

Before you do anything else, ring 0333 366 0103.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank in Barripper: the first few minutes

Do:

- Keys out — then no one can switch anything on.

- If you are at all near moving traffic, put the hazards on.

- The empty bottle or the receipt tells us the product and the amount, so do not throw it away.

- Ring right where you are. Quote a TR14 0 postcode or the nearest street name, and nobody has to search for you.

Not to do:

- No starting your engine — not for a second, not to shift the vehicle.

- Turning the key to ignition by itself starts your pump running on plenty of diesels. Avoid it.

- Pouring in extra diesel does not help: AdBlue settles out instead of thinning.

- Any driving at all is best avoided, including a short way along Fore Street.

- No draining it yourself, either, at the roadside.

Ask the people behind the counter to help you move your vehicle away from the island if you're at a forecourt around Barripper, whether it's the Tesco or somewhere else.

Parked on your own drive? Then it stays just where it is.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank, and what it does there

AdBlue is made for your exhaust, not your motor.

It goes into its own tank and is sprayed into your exhaust gas to clean it.

Not one side suits the other: urea does not belong in a pump, and an injection pump cannot deal with urea.

Fuel blends; AdBlue, after tipped in, will not. The behaviour is nothing like fuel's.

The pickup takes fuel from the lowest part of that tank, and that's just where AdBlue ends up: as it is denser than diesel, it sinks.

When your pump runs, the AdBlue is top of the list to go through. Until then it waits underneath the diesel, which is why a car topped up in Knave-Go-By yesterday and never switched on remains the straightforward case, provided nobody turns your key.

Once it's drawn in, the damage takes two forms.

Crystals and corrosion. As the water dries, it strands urea that hardens in filters and narrow channels; meanwhile, because it attacks some metals, each part it touches suffers for as long as it stays in there.

By daybreak, a car sitting around Barripper with AdBlue in its lines gets worse; if it's just in your tank, it doesn't.

Diesel lubricates the high-pressure pump and each injector as it passes; water gives no lubrication, and that is a separate form of harm.

## Why AdBlue in a diesel is often more significant than petrol

Petrol pumped into a diesel on Morrisons's forecourt leaves your fuel thin — that is the whole problem.

Blended through your diesel and sitting still, it is harmless for now; using the motor is the harm.

AdBlue in a diesel is another matter: not thin fuel, yet no fuel at all.

It doesn't burn, so it can't simply be run through.

Whether your vehicle is in Carnhell Green or the centre of Barripper, turning it over "to see" does more harm in this case than nearly any other slip, and the flush matters for more. Why: it won't stay blended, so watering it down fails; and crystals and corrosion outlast the next tankful.

The good news is the same as with petrol.

Never started? Then the AdBlue sits just inside your tank, the easiest section of the entire system to empty, wherever your vehicle has stopped around Cornwall.

## How AdBlue ends up in a diesel tank around Barripper

After dark, two caps side by side — the AdBlue cap and the diesel one, occasionally under one flap — may appear the same. Nobody means it; many designs allow it.

Most of the time it occurs with a bottle bought on the way home and poured in on the driveway, not at the forecourt.

A couple of familiar ways cover most cases.

Midway through the drop-off, the dashboard warns, and outside Penponds School the top-up is hurried.

A bottle is poured in at the end of the day on a drive just off Vellan Close.

Otherwise, after dark by St Michaels Mount Inn, your car is refilled by someone opening that flap the first time.

It takes place most in the motors drivers know least: a hire car, a new motor, a company car, or the second vehicle of a household with one diesel and one petrol.

Keep it switched off: that's the first response to the same slip, anywhere around Barripper or the rest of Cornwall you are.

## Already started your engine with AdBlue in the diesel tank around Barripper?

In that case, the AdBlue is no longer inside the tank.

Given any running, it goes on to the high-pressure pump and each injector, having passed through the fuel filter and lines.

You may see the motor running roughly, smoking, losing power, showing warning lights or cutting out, perhaps on the way back from Pendarves Wood or halfway across Barripper.

Stop as soon as it is safe, switch off, and do not restart it to check.

With each start, more of that is pulled through.

Barripper lies over 50 miles from the M5; if you were on it, exit at the next junction and stop safely instead of carrying on.

How far it went matters. A couple of hundred yards across Barripper to the car park by Holy Trinity is a very different job from a run towards Truro, under 15 miles away, with the AdBlue reaching further into your system with each mile.

Tell us about how far it had come.

Once the engine has run, the flush covers more, and all of it is done where the vehicle has come to a stop.

Very seldom does it leave long-term damage if it is caught early.

## Barripper: how AdBlue is cleared from a diesel

The vehicle remains where it is, whether that's a street near St John the Evangelist, Treslothan, a driveway, a layby or a forecourt around Barripper, and our van travels to it.

The job depends on three answers, which our engineers get first — what went in, the amount, and if your engine has run.

Next, emptying that tank right there takes out the contaminated diesel and the AdBlue in one go.

The system is rinsed thoroughly, which counts more with AdBlue than with petrol, since what it leaves behind does not rinse out on its own.

A test of your car comes last, once clean diesel goes in and your filter gets flushed or, if needed, swapped.

Engine not run? Then expect roughly half an hour once we are there for most jobs.

Explosion-proof pumps make a busy forecourt sensible to work on, and they're quiet enough not to disturb the neighbours at night.

Clean diesel goes in to prime your system, and that is the last step.

Firing it up comes next, and then you drive off from where your car is parked, by Camborne or on a driveway around Barripper.

It's tested on fresh diesel to make sure it runs properly before we head off.

The entire job is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage.

You receive a VAT invoice and an engineer report later on, which is what insurers want.

If you are near a border, or somewhere hard to describe, ring and ask rather than assuming.

No moving is needed. In Barripper, a village, a mobile service works: your vehicle is emptied where it stands, be it on a driveway, a side street, a parking area or a forecourt.

## What AdBlue in a diesel tank costs to put right around Barripper

No flat figure could be honest, because each job differs.

The price moves first with how long, if at all, the motor has been running, and next with the amount of AdBlue that was put in. After that it turns on where your car is and whether our van can get to it safely, which is simpler on an open driveway than in a tight gap behind Camborne Community Center.

That's why every call from Barripper starts with the same three queries, asked before giving a figure, not after: what got in, how much, and whether it's run.

Given them, the range shrinks to one fixed number.

The price is quoted during the call, before a van sets off; payment comes on the day, by card or by phone, with nothing upfront.

Look at your insurance whilst we're on the way: many carry misfuelling cover.

## In Barripper and still next to the vehicle?

Then the most useful thing you can do is nothing to the vehicle.
